Not so much 'nothing beyond her abrasive surface" more like she feels she has no choice but to go to extremes in order to break from the norms and strict formalities of her society. She IS comfortable with who she is and her actions... But now I've said too much.

I... feel like I do understand her character in some ways. I feel like I can feel her character click in my mind.

She is surrounded by a fool whom she torments endlessly, potentially an equal as a sibling-relationship, and is marred by a troubled past.
Though she is very good at her chosen profession, she lets her job become who she is- all of who she is.
In any but the strictest professional sense, this drives people away- though those select few whose destinies are entwined with hers, cannot escape her, despite her caustic outlook and absolutist stance on her life.

A) Hope is similar to Vi from league of legends. Short tempered, lives the moment and won't take shit from society. She knows what she wants, and if it happens to align with what is deemed "Good" then, hey everybody wins. Befriend her and you have the most fierce, loyal bully on the playground watching your back in a scuffle. Annoy her you will be ignored. Insist and you will be punched! "Shallow" to some, "Simple" to others. But she's true to herself before all else.

B) There's nothing evil about her, chaotic is even a strong word for it. In Freudian terms she has a very strong Ego ("it seeks to please the Id's drive in realistic ways that will benefit in the long term rather than bring grief.") Hope knows what she thinks is right and wrong, and that's all that matters to her. Admittedly that can often lead to trouble because, as we've established, she doesn't conform to society. But if she's done something against the law, in her mind it was for a very good reason.



Besides D&D's alignment system is bullshit anyway, Good and evil is subjective.
