Sketched this out a couple days ago when I was feeling down in an effort to cheer myself up. Didn't finish until today. I might still go back and shade this later, but, Photoshop is starting to irritate me so I kinda gave up on fighting with it for the moment. >.>;
Anyways, I'm pretty huge on Pokemon, and although 3rd gen isn't technically the gen I started with, it was a huge part of my life, and is still to this day my favorite Pokemon generation. No one forgets the first Pokemon they formed a real bond with, for me, that was a Torchic by the name of Blaze. Sadly, he's pretty much stuck in my Ruby game at this point as the internal battery has run dry. =C
Funny how, the first game I ever played in the Pokemon series was Crystal of 2nd gen, but 3rd gen is the one I connected with most. My first Pokemon was a Chikorita, but the first one I truly connected with was a Torchic.
In any case, I decided it was necessary to draw Jaimie with a Torchic. <3
Originally I wanted to draw him with a Blaziken, but, it wasn't working very well. So, maybe another time. >.>

Hehe. If toddler's in the games can be trainers, why can't I, right? >w<
And it's always kinda been my headcanon that not all kids receive their first Pokemon when they officially become trainers. I mean, most probably grow up around Pokemon if their parents were trainers, or coordinators, or... well, pretty much if their parents have Pokemon with them for any reason! So, it seems likely that kids would be given their first Pokemon at a younger age depending on the situation.
