The eyes look a little derp, but keep up the hard work Lock. Also, extra kudos to you as it appears you did not use fondant. Blech... I can't stand that stuff.

Can't stand fondant at all myself. Saddly the people we use to get cakes from did one of two things. They either went to using box cakes and fondant, or they went to using box cakes and a food printer to print out an image that they then just put on top of the cake. As for the eyes, when I was making the Royal Icing decorations I forgot to make her eyes. So had to adlib them at time of final icing with buttercream icing. That and finished all the icing of the two cakes at around 7:30am Saturday morning. Started icing both at about midnight just after I got home from work. *Smiles*

Fondant tastes icky too. I like to use cream cheese frosting

Actually Cream Cheese frosting is the worst one I've come across so far for actually making decorations/decorated cakes. That icing can not hold detailed forms. One of the first cakes made, the people wanted cream cheese frosting. Used it and all the decorations, including the little castles on top of the cake, the icing just kind of slid down. Ended up looking like they were all made of candles that had all melted down to a puddle.

Only if it keeps it's base taste. I've picked up a number of flavoring oils to change the taste of the icing I make.

And a tip for future cakes, cakes look neater if they are base-iced first to completely cover the cake underneath. Let that set, and then pipe on the feathers. :)

*Nods,* Understandable about the base-icing. Saddly didn't have the time or energy to do such. Work full time, so only have a couple hours a day to work on stuff. :( I'm just glad that the feathers stayed on. There were so many feathers that fell to the ground that got reused. But then, we learn as we go. *Smiles*

The twins birthday is next, end of March. They are both into Minecraft, so will be making a Minecraft cake for them. Then sister's oldest is the month after and she is into dragons big time. Hoping to have enough lead time for that party to get what I'm planning done. Including getting my paws on some Dry Ice so that there will be smoke/fog for the dragon cake.
