YEAAA, I finally have a reference for my own character :3
___________
Done 100% in Krita.
How this was made with the free software:
1) Colored background with random brushstrokes blended together.
2) White sketch with a textured chalky brush (I like sketching in white better than black).
3) Black sketch on top of the white sketch.
4) Hide colored background and reduce opacity on the sketch.
5) Enable line and pressure smoothing (just play with the sliders until you have a result you like) and select a nontransparent inking pen brush. On a new layer, add ink to your sketch. If you make a mistake, ctrl+z (I use a single-button macro on my tablet for that). Mistakes can also be cleared up with an eraser - which is extremely precise with line smoothing on. The lineart was done in a dark grey color (not black)
6) Set finished ink layer as top layer with an appropriate blend mode (luminosity, darken, inverse subtract, multiply or whichever one gives the desired result) and add colors to layers underneath.
7) re-enable the colored background and make a dark grey semi-transparant layer on top of it - with the "Inverse Subtract" blend mode. Add stars with a light sparke fx brush or any other individual brush to the dark grey layer.

Really awesome dragon :)
Thanks for the technique tips too, really useful!
Do you mind if I link to this as an honourable mention in my "Can you draw a dragon" art challenge announcement on Krita Creators (Steam)?

(the deadline for submission just passed, I wasn't sure if you had wanted to be included or not?)
