"So... you were... y'know... a soldier?"
"Yes."
"Could you tell me about it?"
"What would I tell you about it?"
"Dunno. Stories? You gotta have stories."
"Not that many, really."
"Well, were you ever scared? Like... of the dark? Dark's pretty scary."
"When I was your age? Yeah. But after that... you kinda learn to appreciate it."
Nights are simple. Quiet, calm, stressless. That's why you use them to rest.
Military folks out there - I admit I have no idea what the uniform policy is. I asked around and got conflicting answers about where the nametag is placed on combat gear and how to correctly write a lieutenant rank on one, so sorry if I messed that up. Thankfully, Vartan's our only ex-pro-military guy, so there's not much to screw up.
Gee... it's still weird whenever I remember Vartan's actually a last name...
I should write more Kid!Colby interactions with the team. They're too much fun.

Different branches of service have different uniforms and different tag placements (Marines, for example, don't use flag tags the way the Army does). Typically speaking, ranks are displayed via their associated rank symbol on one's lapel/collar, or on the center line of one's camouflage blouse or flak vest. They're not spelled out in name tapes--the two name tapes are always "last name" and "branch of service". Hope that helps!
Thanks! I found conflicting references in that regard, some had the nametag in the center, some on the left, my local military person told me right + rank abbreviation... I thought "uniform" is supposed to come in one form only __o
I'm writing this down for future reference, it's a very helpful tip! Cheers!

Thank you! It was a tall order, but it was fun nonetheless. Even though pants in the SF universe universaly end at the heel area, I always thought heavy duty professions, military included, need protection for the rest as well. It's not really much of a technology, just modified boot crossbred with RL horse hoof covers. Not much, technology-wise x)
