She stood there, thinking of home. tired, wanting to sleep for eternity. she had a letter she was saving, waiting a while till she read it, just to give her something to look forward to at the end of the day. the perimeter was clear, the road was secure. it was cold out. it always got cold during the night. they'd been out setting up a firebase for a few days, digging mostly, setting up bunkers, barracks structures, etc. it had been a long hard fight to secure this area, but they had taken it, and were holding, for whatever reason top needed this godsforsaken piece of land for. her two closest friends had been killed a few days ago, but she tried not to think about them.

she watched a vehicle approach, having just been let inside the wire by the guard there. for a moment, she was lit up with the yellow glow of the headlights, then the vehicle was past her. she sighed, and looked at her watch, unable to read it in the darkness. she held it closer to her face so the cigarette in her mouth lit it up a bit with it's warm orange glow. 21:00. she still had half an hour before her shift was up.
