Seers are mages with a speciality (either practiced or innate) for searching for things - whether that thing is the answer to a question, a lost item, or a person. They can also use their magic to open a temporary audio-visual portal between two individuals, allowing instant communication at long range; it's this service which they tend to see most of their income from, and a few particularly exclusive bordellos and brothels have a permanently employed seer or two to help them provide a long-range viewing service for those unfortunate souls alone in the middle of nowhere.
