From the book series Sira there is from, it's how these character handle 'magic'. Letai draw energy naturally wisped off of living things by the life-stream. Imagine creatures as little forms of clay sitting at the bottom of a slow-moving river. The clay is slowly carried away by the river as it passes, wearing away the clay until none remains. This is living and dying to the Letai, the life stream carries that clay away, only for it to be deposited later in time (as new life is born), a bit of everyone is a bit of all who were there before them, more or less. The letai can draw upon this life-material as it's naturally pulled away, and they can use it for healing, or even for fighting if they really need to.

Heavy positive emotions like joy, laughter, contentment, pleasure and the like allow the Letai easier drawing of this energy, so they tend to run things like spas, restaurants, inns and brothels because of the more intense energies there. In their time, they were heavily respected and valued members of their communities since their ability to draw essence was heavily dependent on making people around them comfortable and happy. It's easy to be friends with them, and hard to make them into enemies. :3
