I tell you... these things love slipping into my lair; such curious invaders. Thing is, I -never- see them when they do it. At random later, I hear mmmmzzmmmm bt mzzzzzmmmm bzzztttt and find one bumping against the ceiling.
So today I got this friendly fellow. Usually they are a little tougher to con, but this one was pretty cooperative. And thirsty apparently; I'd just washed my paws, and were wet when I get to get him and after I got him to crawl on me, he kept nibbling the water away. I was surprised he stayed with me like he did... for a good 15 mins or so without him ever flying off, even while walking around the house. I guess with all the extra cold weather we had, everything is coming out now and looking for food and such. He's off now to go be with his fellow kind; probably to plot to sneakily build another 40+ population house under my porch.

Think I'd rather take my chances with a wasp than a shark. I'm a bit disadvantaged in water. If you get to do that, though, and live to tell about it, please do tell. That would be quite fascinating and pretty much one of the most interesting things anybody'd ever done.
I try to befriend most any creature. Roaches, I'm not fond of, but these aren't nasty and destructive. I try to let creatures be, so long as they aren't harming me or my property. Some folks just aren't very natury or willing to live among other things that isn't a household pet. It is a bit sad.
what a nice little friend! its a shame everyone here is acting so negatively toward it. if it really is a "he" you have there, there is nothing to fear but its mandibles (and maybe, speaking from my experience handling drone bees, a surprisingly strong grip) and seeing that you're not made of paper or mud, it's harmless.
I find a lot of folks fear any stinging or biting bug. Such are more willing to sting than bite; you have to approach them in the right way for them to feel relaxed with your presence (if you've dealt with bees, perhaps you get what I'm talking about). I really don't know if "he" is really he a or not. Bug gender isn't my specialty, I fear. I've had an ordinary honeybee nibble on my paw before... caught him off the floor at a corner store and I guess I had a slight remnant of sweet food or something he liked on my paw; rather more felt funny than anything, although the cashier guy was a bit taken aback about the fact I -willingly- had a bee on me. Had to fight to get him OFF my paw in the grass by where I parked; he flat didn't want to leave.
Bees are quite wonderful friends, such lovely sweetness they make. *purrrrr*

a few months ago i found a carpenter drone that had somehow lost his wings and most of the hair on his thorax. poor thing was on my driveway in 90F heat and i couldnt leave him out there, so i picked him up and brought him in the house where he lived out the last month and a half of his life. very very friendly little guy who loved to cling to my fingers and lick honey off a cotton swab.
sometimes its hard to tell whats a male and whats a female; usually females are larger than males and thats about it. eastern carpenter bees like the one i picked up are a little easier to tell: males have a white or light yellow patch on the front of their face while females do not :>

Oh my... fellow probably got in a fight with a wasp or other bug. Or another animal tried to "play" with him. Losing wings... that would just be... terrible. *holds his wings tightly to himself* Terribly nice of you to offer him a little extra life; I hope he enjoyed his last days with you.
The drones are larger than typical worker bees, are they not? Never had him want to sting you or undesirable of your presence?

i think drone bees may be larger, but female wasps tend to be larger than males. as for my little friend, i dont think he ever wanted to sting me (knowing carpenters, if he were ever threatened or upset he wouldve bitten me), and even if he did, he couldnt. only female bees and wasps can sting, because stingers are modified ovipositors, organs used for laying eggs. :>
I honestly can't say the word "cute" comes to mind about 99% of bugs, but thanks, BlueDragon (although your av doesn't look like a dragon?) Bees are my favorite of the stingy creatures, though... they help the plants mate with each other, and make that real tasty stuff that goes on biscuits.
They are tougher to con to get to want to land on your paw, though (especially if you are near their food source... they'll quickly be off to that).

:P I just tend to like how they look ~ and im too lazy to make a new account? :> so i dont really care about my accounts name :P not going to move all my stuff :B
I usually just entice them to head towards an opening =P as opposed to picking them up and putting them outside, i pick up ants and put them outside, they're quite similar in a sense. ~ bumble bee's bite more then they sting. ~ as for other insects :P i tend to pick up moths n'such, once in a while the occasional beetle here and there. I'de say the only thing I ever kill is mosquito's :>
