It was dark in the cabin. It was built to be a hunting lodge, but this deep in winter the only resident was the one who built it. He wasn't old, but the years of harsh weather aged his face. The scars on his body were trophies won from the worthy predators he often contended with for food.
He was lonely there. With no wife or children the only company he received came in the spring and summer months when the snows melted and the other hunters came to claim their share. He was sitting in his chair by the fire when he heard a growl and a whine coming from outside. He wanted to see what was happening but knew that going unarmed was a good was to lose his life as so many others had.
He grabbed his hunting dagger, bow and quiver and noticed there were only two arrows left. He had forgotten to fashion more the previous day. He heard the sound again and opened the door to find a small wolf being attacked by three others. The small one seemed to be no more than a pup and was already injured. He could not let the poor thing suffer so he drew back and let the first arrow fly. It struck true in the chest of the nearest wolf and buried itself to the fletching. Knowing the first arrow struck true the hunter loosed the second before the first wolf had fallen. The second arrow pierced the farthest wolf's throat and it fell as quickly as the first. With only the knife the hunter dropped his bow and charged the third wolf as in turned to face him. The wolf jumped and as it did the hunter sunk the knife into the back of it's neck. severing the spine.
With the others dead the hunter took the wolf inside after checking it and noticing it had passed out. He carefully covered it gashes in a salve and bandaged them. After that all he could do was wait.
After two days the wolf awoke and the hunter saw it. At first the pup was afraid of the two legged creature. It soon learned however that he was kind and was giving him food and easing his pain. after a week the wounds closed fully and the hunter took the pup outside to set him free. At first the little wolf sat there and watched the hunter. Soon the wolf became hungry however and saw a rabbit to chase. The hunter went inside to eat and sleep. After a day the hunter heard a bark at his door. He grabbed his dagger and opened the door t fin the pup with a rabbit in it's mouth. This, he thought, was a sign that he need no longer be alone in the winters. He took the little pup in and they lived long together.
