The 80's were awesome. We were dumb as hell, but generally happy.
Then the 90's came along, and it was no longer cool to be happy. You had to be "awesome", which was a state of being that was yet undefined. Everyone was trying to be a hard-ass ghangsta or something else that was tough. Thus, the 90's fucked us all.
The first new years of the new millinium aren't doing so hot either....

I like to think the zips (the new "aughts") have learned from the 80's and 90's. The ranks of "adults" are even now being filled out by those who were born into the 80's, but had their formative years in the 90's, plenty of time to learn optimism before the dot-com bubble burst. This generation has had some great things to grow up on--Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, the birth of the furry fandom along with the image-based internet (IRC doesn't count)...
