Indeed, I always like it when a story gives "science" to powers or magic, makes it seem more realistic. In this case, I'd guess that virmir can cast spells that transform others, but there's likely either a limitation and/or he needs a lot of energy/stamina to do it (a limitation could be that it's temporary)
