One of my ultimate favorite novels of all times when I was a child, was the novels (a serie of three books) about a black unicorn named Aljan, written by Meredith Ann Pierce.
Recently I remembered those novels again and went to the library to borrow them. The story is still as mega awsome as I remembered it, written for children or not, its still a good book and I'm 26 XD
I was in the mood to draw aquines at that time and also in the mood to draw this Aljan so I did. This all happened like three months ago, but I could never pull myself together to finish it x.x so its just been leying there ever since and first finished tonight XD

I'm sensing a reference to the old book "black beauty" in this, that I am.
Not that I'm faulting you for it. I just thought it was something I had to say given how it looks.
That and because I haven't read any unicorn stories. Just the black beauty one.
Still, honestly speaking, I'll have to jump the bandwagon as this is.. quite impressive. I mean you completely nailed the anatomy of the unicorn there perfectly. [As I can't draw ferals to this day...]
The way you shaded the unicorn in? Just superb! I say this as it's a black unicorn and you still have a wonderful shadow effect that makes the main and coat look lush and yet sleek and vibrant rather than dark gothic and dull. That works.
That and I'm loving the dramatic background there! I mean you have a mountain, river, clouds and LIGHTNING in there. God only knows how you pulled that off. [I don't know if that was hand drawn in or just plain photoshop effect.]
This one quickly won my vote for a good picture oh Ziba chan~!

Thank you :)
Horse was however not referenced from black beauty. Not all horses can be black beauty just because they are black XD He just happens to be a black unicorn with a white half moon and a full moom marking on his head and one hindleg. I used a photograph of a horse from a book about horse breeds that I have :) (that horse was however brown) for the anatomy... Tail, markings, color etc I did from the descriptions in the books.
and as for the background. I did it by hand yes :) only the grass, the leaves on the trea and the lightning was done with a brush. Ohh and the white glittering on the lake was with a brush as well. But beside of that all was in hand :)

Hehe, so do I :) its such a good story. Am already in the mood to read the books again here soon XD
and thanks :) I was really hoping that I remembered all single details about him when I drew and colored this. The only thing I allowed myself artistic freedom on was the color of his hooves and horn. Making them as redbrown as my ps7 would allow me to, mostly because I first of all couldnt find any close description of the color of those two things but also because I figured there was already so much black on him and wanted to add just a little color
