A resident of many countries of central and southern Africa, the Long-Tailed Widowbird is known for the male’s super long tail, reaching up to half a meter in length.
This tail has long baffled evolutionary theories of sexual selection with many experiments done to figure out why this feature has been passed along. Some conclusions state that females simply prefer longer tails, even if they made artificially longer by human intervention, with some saying males with longer tails are more reproductively successful.
