'Lit' is short for 'literally'. Hunt-sign developed between predators as a means of communicating silently with each other whilst hunting prey, and as such the signals all have a distinctly functional meaning. Since then, though, things have elaborated so that use of certain traditional signals in certain contexts has come to be associated with other, more social meanings. As such, Xal and Cloud are actually flashing the 'white' text back and forth, but they know damn well it carries the meaning expressed in the coloured texts. If you like you can imagine an extra finger-wiggle from Xal to make it 'Prey running towaaaaaards us...'
