Huh. It seems that their form varies from region to region and time to time, though it seems to be most commonly (or, perhaps, popularly today) depicted as either a cross of a stag and a dragon, or a unicorn and a dragon. Though, I think I understand my confusion, now - this fanfic author has 'ki-rin' as a sort of elemental species of Equestria, and they seem to be based off the mythological creature.
