I think it' because most furries can identify with him for one reason or another, or he reminds you of somefur you know, be that a friend or an actual cat.
Plus since the series is almost a Cowboy Bebop spiritual successor, I can't think of any character from that series that he particularly lines up with... closest I can come up with after some thought is maybe Faye.
