Another present for Mum which doubled as a practice run for a present for my girl (I was going to make her a ring out of bone, but my god... far too advanced for me right now). I just stuck the whole pendant in the scanner, and the glare took out some detail. There are actually five toes and five claws on the piece, but you might not see it right.
I used this picture, found on Google, as reference. http://images.jupiterimages.com/com.....8/22572845.jpg
The bone used was a kangaroo shinbone I had in my collection. The pendant is around an inch wide by two tall.
EDIT: I have since filled in the carved-out pawprint parts with a mixture of carbon black and burnt sienna acrylic, which I then sealed in mid-gloss varnish to protect the paint. This brings out the pawprint's detail, without destroying the warm texture and color of the bone, which is perfectly smoothed.

I use a dremel-style electric tool with many different attachments and a long, pen-like extension on a cable so I can use it more easily. Even on the higher speeds, it still takes a good half hour to even cout out a blank or square of bone to work on, so you gotta have some patience.
Yeah, I use witching-hour-wolf's good dust mask with a cheaper fifty-cent dust mask underneath that (I'm a smoker, I don't need any more lung damage :P) I also use some industrial protective glasses to keep the flying shards of goddamn-sharp things out of my eyes. Eventually I'll get some earplugs or something too, a constant pitch for any length of time can harm your hearing, especially when it's as loud and high as the whine of the drill.
Thank you :) The bone has a really nice honeyed color due to lying by the side of a road for about a summer, it picks up the colors of the sand that was around it.
