Be aware: Not being able to read is not at all a sign of stupidity.
I'm certain the gnoll saw the sign and thought about it, remembered seeing similar signs at the butcher shop, where it had been explained that they told the type of meat and price.
However obviously the meat here is for free, because:
a) there's noone there selling it
and
b) theres none of these tiny circly things they call "numbers" on the sign either.
Furthermore it is unnecessary to decypher the sign because the type of meat is obvious to a gnoll by
a) smell
b) color
c) texture
d) consistency
and of course
e) taste
last but not least - and to dispell any doubt - anyone who would not want a bypassing gnoll to eat that meat would have locked or hidden it away or would be guarding it instead of presenting it in the open like a buffet, therefore whoever put it there obviously intended it as an offering but if that wasn't enough, he even went to the trouble of putting up a sign for it in the first place to make it more obvious! Just for comparison I took some signs from the local butcher shop for comparison. As you can see they have the exact same layout and font:
Who could really blame that gnoll for making an obvious assumption ?
Isn't instead the one who put up the sign to blame for making such contradictory statements?
It's clearly a setup made to get an honest gnoll into trouble. A trap.
Your honor, we apply "not guilty" on all claims made by the plaintiff, furthermore we are filing charges against the accusor regarding attempted insurance fraud and false statement.
