Species Information:
Ari’n
(Ar-een)
Home Planet:
P’llae (Puh-lay) - Rendered uninhabitable.
New P’llae - Established 238 years after the fall of the empire.
Appearance:
The Ari’n are a mostly canine esque species with some marsupial and primate traits. Their average heights are around 10 feet tall for males, and 12 feet for females, though it is not uncommon for females in some parts of the planet’s lower hemisphere to grow to 13ft . Fur colour is a dark gray, with light gray patches on the stomach, hands, and feet. Fingers, toes, upper arms, muzzle, and tail have uniform markings that can be any colour, though the most common is green. (47% of the population)
Flesh colour can be either orange or purple. A genetic mutation occurs in 0.005% of the population that causes the two colours to merge, either making half of the flesh orange, and half purple, or melds the two together.
They have eyes are slightly larger than those of most anthros, and their Iris and Sclera are one large piece surrounding the black pupil.
The bones and teeth of an Ari’n are extremely tough and are a shiny metallic gray colour.
The legs of an Ari’n are digigrade, and their paws are short like a feral animal’s. Each paw has 3 toes, each with a single pad, and one more large pad on the main sole of the paw. The hands are the same with 4 fingers and a thumb, each with a pad at the tip of a finger, and two separate pads side by side on the palm. The paws and toes have dark gray claws that are a part of the bone structure and are quite sharp.
The Ari’n‘s ears are also large, and could be compared to that of a fennec’s, though relatively a bit smaller. They stand up straight normally, and the top halves will droop down when they are unhappy. The ears both have two notches near the top, both facing inward toward each other.
Their muzzles are a combination of Canine and Primate. They are slightly smaller and more rounded than a canine’s and possess the nose of a primate. Inside the mouth, they have sharp pointy teeth of a carnivore, though they are fewer and more spaced out than one would expect. The teeth towards the back are flat for grinding, like in a human.
The Arin’s tail is long and skinny, with short fur (not poofy). The tip of the tail separates into two rounded ends (Y Shape), though this separation only happens a few inches from the end, so they are close together. It is prehensile like a primate’s and is much more bendable as it contains no bone. The length of the tail is always from the tail base, up to the tips of their ears. Instead of letting their tails hang on the ground, the Ari’n will either rest them over their own shoulders, or hug them to the back of their necks using the split tips.
History:
The Ari’n began as a much smaller and weaker race, but was among the first species in the Milky Way galaxy to reach a space faring level of technology. Once out in space they realized that most other species were larger than them and that they were liable to be attacked when they others gained the ability to travel the stars. Being a paranoid people, they decided to take measures to safeguard their existence. A planet wide program was initiated that used genetic modification of early stage fetuses. DNA was mutated in ways that would increase size, strength, and mental capacity. This worked well, and the first group of 1000 test subjects turned out very similar to the modern form of the Ari’n. The procedure was authorized rather quickly and rolled out planet wide, effecting nearly 70% of all births afterward. It would take a few decades for the mental side effects to become apparent. The new forms of Ari’n were much more aggressive than their smaller counterparts and possessed a higher capacity for sadism and cruelty. This discovery was made far too late however, and by the time the treatments were stopped a good portion of the population consisted of the mutated forms. Due to their physical and mental superiority, the struggle for power was brief and the smaller forms encountered the brunt of the casualties. In the end, the mutated forms kept the Ari’n name and began calling the unmutated subset ‘Nal’ meanining‘chained or enslaved’ in their language. The nal were allowed to continue breeding and were enslaved, acting as a source of both labor and food for the carnivorous race. 20,000 years passed under the reign of the new Ari’n and they quickly evolved technologically, becoming the most advanced race in the galaxy. Their empire consisted of nearly 50 planets taken from other species and colonized. Sometime in the late empire, a resistance movement began to form, opposing the Ari’n government’s practices and near complete control over it’s people. At it’s peak, the resistance only had about 40,000 members (small, for a species with a population nearing 50 billion). This threat was seen as small by the Ari’n government, though this would prove to be a fatal underestimation. The Ari’n resistance managed to uncover a weapon of mass destruction from one of the colony planets and transported it to the homeworld P’llae. They made continued threats to the government, saying that they had the capacity to effectively destroy the planet if the demands weren't met. The head of the government met the threats with a massive retaliation, having everyone ever even suspected of being a resistance member rounded up and killed. In his anger and despair at seeing one of his family members killed in this roundup, one of the scientists tasked with guarding the weapon activated it. Almost instantly, the planet’s atmosphere was ignited, killing billions in seconds and leaving anyone who had gotten to a bunker/safe building to die once their air reserves ran out.
Cut off from the homeworld, the other Ari’n controlled planets met a renewed opposition from the captive species that had once inhabited the colony worlds. This too came to a quick end when another powerful race, the Zanthiers, began releasing bio-weapons onto Ari’n controlled worlds, killing both the Ari’n and many of the Nal who shared closer genetic bonds. The aftermath of this left many worlds to be reclaimed by their former ruling species.
For nearly 200 years, the Ari’n were thought destroyed. This was proven otherwise when a cryogenically preserved Ari’n (A member of the rebellion) was discovered. Later on, this Ari’n found a planet on the edge of the galaxy that the Zanthier fleet had missed (The planet had been in the process of invasion when the homeworld was destroyed). The rebel Ari’n was prepared to destroy it, but after a trip down to the surface she was amazed to find that the Ari’n inhabitants had shed their conquering ways to become more peaceful with the help of the native species. Within 5 years of their discovery, a peace treaty was signed with the Zanthiers which declared that the new society of Ari’n would strive to be better than the Empire had been, and they were allowed to return to the galactic community under close supervision which both sides agreed to.
This new Ari’n society soon found a new planet to make their homeworld, and began the long task of building back to their previous state, this time with a more peaceful attitude and democratic government. The new society decided to atone for their old ways, dedicating many of their resources towards making reparations to planets and civilizations that they had once enslaved. They share any and all scientific discovery freely and have even gone so far as to ally themselves with the Zanthiers, the species which played an instrumental role in destroying the old empire.
Physiology:
Ari’n have many of the same organs as a human/fur, though in different quantities. They have two hearts, 3 lungs, 2 stomachs, 1 Kidney, 2 spleens, and a few other minor differences. Their bone structure is relatively similar though they have a few more ribs than the average human/fur. Bones are made out of a dense material that is nearly as hard as iron, though a bit lighter. This helps them survive their planet’s gravity, which is about 2.3 times that of Earth/Altera. It would be very hard to break the bones of an Ari’n.
The females of the species are slightly larger and stronger, with longer life spans.
They release a pheromone that is supposed to be pleasant to most species (Though for some species it can act as a repellent). This is used to both attract mates among their own species, and attract prey from others.
Digestive system:
The flesh inside of the body is slicker than that of a normal fur. The mouth contains two tongues and 24 sharp, metallic teeth. most of the front teeth are used for tearing and shredding meat, while the 4 in the back are used for chewing. Once swallowed, food is sent down the esophagus into the upper stomach for digestion. The chamber is home to a powerful acid that is able to liquefy meat in a matter of minutes. This process is helped along by strong muscle contractions. Once food is sufficiently liquefied it will flow through a sphincter at the bottom of the stomach and into a second stomach. In this chamber, food is absorbed into the body and waste is left behind. Waste travels from this stomach into a large intestine where moisture is removed and it is finally expelled.
The Ari’n digestive system is able to digest plant matter, but a special enzyme is required to process and absorb it in the second stomach.
Reproduction and sex:
Sex with the Ari’n works like it does with most species. The male genitalia resembles a mixture of canine and human, with a bulbous head and large knot at the base. The testicles are replaced with a sac, the inner walls of which create and store semen. The female’s genitals are covered by a vulva. Past the vulva is a small chamber which is large enough to contain the knot, and constricts upon orgasm. The vaginal entrance lies at the other side of this chamber, and functions as that of a human with ovaries and a womb.
Gestation lasts only 2 months after conception. The child is born slightly larger than a human child, and will grow to full Ari’n size within 23 years.
Old Society:
The Ari'n are best described as civilized barbarians. Their culture has evolved over thousands of years, and is much like that of earth. The people go about their lives which revolve around politics, business, learning, love, and entertainment. Their lives are made easier however by both their extremely advanced technology and their twin species, the Nal, which are used as cheap and expendable labor.
The Ari’n have little empathy for other species, which they believe to be below them. It is a centerpoint of all Ari’n belief that they are the penultimate form of life in the universe, and that all other life is lesser and created only to serve them. Because of this it is acceptable to enslave and kill other species with no guilt whatsoever. It is common practice to kill alien species for food when one is hungry (so long as the alien is not owned as a slave by another Ari’n). Punishment for errors is usually death, due to the abundance and cheapness of slaves.
The Ari’n diet consists of the meat of sentient species (feral species are seen as too primitive and dirty to even use as food unless an Ari’n has no other option. Live meat is preferred and consists of 25% of the typical Ari’n diet.
The Ari’n children are indoctrinated at a young age, as the school systems are strictly controlled by the planetary government. Along with education in math, science, and history, Ari’n are taught that they are a race of perfect beings whose mission is to spread out among the galaxy. Because food is plentiful and lives are comfortable, there is little descent among the population.
New Society:
The Ari’n of the new empire live their lives much differently than those of the old empire. The society is built around the concept of freedom and transparency, and is governed by a direct democracy. Unlike a representative democracy (America), every Ari’n is given a vote on government actions. This process is streamlined by the use of AI’s by nearly every citizen. The option of the vote is given to the AI, who share’s opinions with his or her’s host Ari’n. The host can review the day’s vote before sending it off.
Relationships are still complicated, each Ari’n having around 3 partners each. Partners do not normally live with each other, though they are no more or less loving than those of other species. Children are traditionally raised by the parent of the same sex (Mothers raise daughters, Fathers raise sons), but this is in no way a rule. A pair of Ari’n could always decide on a different arrangement. Marriage is indicated by a piercing on the right ear, usually the colour of the partner’s markings.
Technology:
Ari’n technology is based on two materials. Crystal and liquid metal. Complex microcircuitry is carved into a crystal upon it’s creation and can function in a multitude of ways. Liquid metal is able to mold itself into any shape and then solidify, making it useful in the quick construction of tech and ships. Both the metal and crystals can be destroyed with a large enough electrical shock.
Weaponry:
The main Ari’n weapon is the Crystal cannon which comes in many forms. The smallest form is an arm mounted device than can fire an 8 inch long (2 inch diameter) diamond-duritanium alloy projectile at ⅔ the speed of sound every second. This is the standard weapon used by the old Ari’n military’s soldiers.
The larger ‘turret cannon’ is able to fire a projectile 30 inches long (6 in diabeter) every 3 seconds. These rounds are able to fire at 9/10 the speed of sound in atmosphere, and can be fired at .997 the speed of light in the frictionless environment of space. This proves fatal to most ships, whose shields are too slow to react.
The final form is a ship mounted heavy crystal cannon used to destroy ships in one volley, as well as destroy civilizations from space. It is capable of firing 10 foot long explosive crystal rounds that release the concussive power of a 10,000 KT explosion.
This level of technology helped the Ari’n become the most powerful race in the galaxy, and has since been outlawed in the new empire. Less powerful weapons are used by the new Ari’n ships and soldiers, though they are still quite formidable.
Spaceships:
The new society depends on spaceflight for exploration, rather than the space bending technology. (It was seen as too powerful to effectively regulate, and is outlawed until a defence against it is designed.) Their ships are based on hexagonal geometric designs and are relatively advanced. Each hexagon segment is able to freely attach and detach itself to the main hull, making the ship designs and configurations highly adaptable and changeable. The first ship of this design (Prototype called the Halcyon II) was created with a mixture of Zanthierian and Ari’n technology and was considered a success.
The outer hull of the ships are made of a thin coating of liquid metal which is able to repair itself quickly in the event of a hull breach. The inner hull is made of replicated Zanthierian stone. (Old ship designs had hulls comprised entirely of liquid metal, though a shortage has made that impractical. Most ships have an ion impulse drive, a light speed drive, and an FTL drive for long range travel. Crystal cannon weapons are used for defence along with low power laser weaponry.
