The finished sgain dubh for Wolf Smith.
Well, almost finished- It needs the sheath made and some brass tacks added.
Have to work out the pattern next, then drill very tiny holes for the shafts before using some glue and a tack hammer to tap them in.
This pic turned out rather dark, and I think my camera is dieing on me.
(Wouldn't focus correctly for half the shots... Which is happening a lot more often when I try to use it.)
The walnut burl/crotch cut wood is really nice on this, but the tiger striped pattern is a lot more visible in RL.
Damn thing is also shaving sharp, and I've actually managed to cut myself on it about three times while doing the final polishing.
Wolf specified a longer than normal hilt on this one, so its got a rather long grip.
Theres limits to how long you can make something like this though, so I did the best I can.
Most sgains are constructed with whats called a "whittle tang".
That is to say, the tang of the blade only reaches about halfway, and its glued into the grip.
This one has a full tang, which is peened on the end like a large dagger or sword.
Very solid construction, and way heavier than a sgain needs to be, but Wolf wanted the best.
And so he got it.
