Free Sketch Friday: "Now Hold Yer Horses!"
A request by my pff (that's pony friend forever!)
nurio of some cute filly Applejack and Granny Smith! I feel like Granny Smith didn't quite translate into my style... But this was still very fun, and I hope you all like it as much as I liked drawing it! Or at least half as much as I liked drawing it, because I liked doing this one quite a bit!

That lack of comments... Perhaps most of your watchers aren't really MLP fans...?
Well, no matter. I have enough love for this drawing to compensate for anyone.
It's amazingly cute, I can't even accurately describe it. Those round puffed cheeks and that cute little muzzle on Applejack. That puff of an annoyed sigh. Yeah, I can't find any of the right words for this.
I wonder, are the planks of the wall in the background intentionally crooked? I like the effect, actually, but I can't tell if it's due to hasty drawing or full intent. Either way, nice job. =P
The stove, on the other hand, contrasts with the wall, being amazingly straight. It looks so dimensionally correct that it almost looks like it comes straight out of a technical manual.
I am not too sure what you mean when you say you think Granny Smith doesn't translate into you style. I don't actually see much wrong with her. Only thing I actually see that looks off is that her right eye sort of looks like it escapes the boundaries of her skull. But only slightly so.
The way the old sketch line is still visible from Applejack's front left leg makes it almost look like she's stomping it on the ground hurriedly and impatiently. I don't think it's intended, but it's actually a very nice effect! I see wobble lines, so I presume she's actually waving her hoof impatiently?
I wonder... And this is a question to Granny Smith... Wouldn't it be more efficient to soak that hat in some water instead of trying to clean it with a rag? (I don't presume fictional characters can break the bounds of reality and answer this question for me, right?)
I do like how she does seem to be putting effort into it. At least, that shows in her expression and that small sweatdrop.
A friend of mine to whom I showed this drawing says the left front hoof and hind leg look "a bit derpy"? I personally don't see it, but I thought to mention it nonetheless in case you do see the same thing he sees.
Though he mentioned that the left hind leg looks a bit too outstretched. Like, too far off to the left side of her body, if that makes sense? I think I sorta see it, but it took a long explanation before I did.
Uhhh... There's probably a whole lot more I want to say, but I think I should stop now to not overload you with information...

I suppose not, though I think a few are! Generally, my pony work doesn't get too many comments, but I don't worry much about that! It's still fun to make ^3^

They were unintentionally crooked, I tend to not use a ruler when I draw, and it often makes my backdrops crooked! XD Though, I think it was wallpaper instead of planks: I based the background off of this image, though I was looking at it on my 3DS screen, which might explain the... Rather minimized approach. :'D
Wow, glad the cabinet came out good at least! Thank you, sometimes these hands of mine can get inorganic background shapes right, yay! \o/
I tried to draw her tapping her hoof, so I was initially going to have her straight leg drawn as well as the raised one... But I thought this way looked a bit better!
I wasn't sure how to have her cleaning it, mainly because I wasn't sure what material the hat was made out of! I assumed leather, so I thought soaking it in water might be bad... Most of the leather and suede items I own aren't supposed to get wet! So I figured a rag was a safe, neutral option for wiping off mud and the like : >
Ahh, yes... I had a bit of trouble with her face in general, I feel like I made her look a bit too young! I wanted her to look somewhat younger since she was presumably younger when Applejack was a filly (Unfortunately, I didn't have access to clips from episodes to find out at the time), but I feel like she doesn't quite look like herself... Ah well, I'm glad you still like it though!
If anything, I think that Applejack's rear right leg looks more off: the left hind leg shows some foreshortening, at least! Though, a horse sitting down like that seems like an unnatural position in general... I think if given a second chance on this picture, I would have drawn her lying on her belly and drumming her hooves on the ground. :>
You're fine! I'm glad that you enjoyed this so much, and I was a little uncertain on many aspects so critique is good! I was hoping you would like this, and I'm glad you do!

That's the right attitude! Always draw what you want, no matter the comments. (Or lack thereof.)
Well, you still managed to make it look like she's tapping it thanks to those remains from the initial sketch. Though, perhaps it's more like stomping.
Smart thing about the hat. Yeah, soaking leather sure wouldn't be a good thing. But Applejack's hat has been wet on a few occasions already without any negative effects.
And yeah. I really really do like this drawing. Thank you!

I like to think so too, thank you! It can be a bit hard sometimes, but it's also nice to be able to make things that people like! And favs are always nice to get too, though the personality in a comment can be a bit more meaningful to me. :D
That is a good point! Maybe her hat is magical, or made out of synthetic leather of some kind? Or... Maybe cartoon pony magic? Maybe her hat is made out of a unique element... We shall call it... Applenium! Yes, this is assuredly a good idea. BD
You're very welcome! I really really liked making it too! :DDD
