FWA art - Animalympics art cards
So FWA just concluded and I had quite a good time visiting with people and drawing up a bunch of stuff. I'll be uploading the rest of the work a little later but I wanted to first share an interesting set of cards that I did during my downtime.
Evertime I go to a show I bring along this little package of Bristol paper art cards that measure about 2 x 3 inches in size, and the idea is that I'll doodle something just so that when people walk by I'm not looking bored or pathetic, and hopefully whatever I produce will entice someone to buy the result. This time around I decided that I'd revisit the Animalympics characters I enjoyed drawing back at MFF last year because darnit, even if nobody else wanted to buy them I was going to have some fun.
Happily these did catch a few eyes as I was working and one lady liked them enough to buy all three, especially if I could draw a fourth card featuring Dean Wilson, so these are no longer with me. I may revisit the concept though because yeah, the characters are fun to draw and there's a bunch more entertaining moments from the original production that I could have illustrated.

I watched the Animalympics a few moths ago for the first time. It was hilarious and entertaining. Not featured here is the penguine master martial artist whose gif was someone's icon for the longest time and I finally found it through a friend. I love the novelty of some of the things that you bring back! I wish I'd been a Disney illustrator in a past life!
Keep up the good work!

Funny thing: while I found the production as a whole entertaining and the individual characters memorable the absolute star for me was the brilliant title animations that played out before the start of each different olympic event. I'm a HUGE fan of that sort of animation which was very common on network television shows and commercials circa 1980 and Animalympics just took that style of presentation and went nuts with it. Each title uses a different reveal method and it comes across as alternately awesome or ridiculously over the top depending on your familiarity with the style. I loved it!
It had been awhile since I saw the production (it doesn't seem right to call it a "movie" or "show") but when the lady said it would be great if I could add in the kooky surreal background from his diving sequence I had to go back and watch that scene again. Wow... that was a lot trippier than I remembered! If I had it with me I would have TOTALLY added glitter effects surrounding Dean in that card.
These are amazing! My mate, Changa, just finished a remastered version of Animalympics featuring the original Winter games TV special, which I seem to have the only copy of. I recorded it off TV in 1980. Most people now only see the feature with bits of the Winter games cut it. The version that was the hit of early Furry fandom was made by the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization and shown at conventions all over the world until the 1990s. Now we have the special addition which we hope to start screening for the new generation of Furs. We will be showing it at Califur at the end of May, with Michael Fremer as a Guest of Honor attending. He was the co-writer/director, music director and provided nearly all the voices for the show. Let me know if you are interested in this special addition of Animalympics.
Hey there, I've been out of town for awhile but it's great to see your response. :) Glad you liked 'em and especially pleased to hear your thoughts on them being frameable. Heh. :)
As for the scan, I always ask for those since the results usually come out better than my camera can produce, especially if there's my flash casts a shadow or the angle gets off making the photograph go out of focus, but in this case the results turned out pretty good and I went ahead and posted it.
Cheers!
