I hate that too in RPG's, replaying Golden Sun on the GBAs and "oh look a treasure chest!" NOPE! I have the guides but yeah that is not fun.

It could be worse, it could be the Borderlands 2 Mimics who are much more scary-looking and can't be hurt in their chest form, so the only option is to activate the chest, back off as fast and far away as possible and pray it's not one of them.
