This gourd sculpted beetle was a fun experiment that I plan on doing again. It was a birthday gift for my bff bluewolfcheetah. We're both into entomology, beetles especially, and the Goliath beetle is on the top of our awesome list. :)
This beetle was made with two gourds that make the body, and old coat hanger wire made the legs. I used epoxy and paperclay to sculpt the details and a little faux fur for the belly/leg hairs. Some devil claw seed pod points were added for the sharp points on the legs and head. It is a wall hanging sculpture, so an eye hook was set into the belly for easy placement. I loved painting it, Goliath beetles have unique patterns that vary from thick stripes to crossing lines that resemble wood grain.
And yes, Goliath beetles can get this big in real life! Normal ones get an inch or so long but the African Goliath beetle is palm sized. ;)
I am up to making more but at this time I want to still experiment, so no commissions of these just yet. New ones will be offered up for sale though! 3 in the works.

that is amazing. your work and the species both.
i don't think i've ever seen anything that big. pretty sure i've never been where they are. i'm guessing someplace tropical.
i'm guessing mostly harmless, but i wouldn't want one digging its little claws into me in a panic or anything.

Why thank you!
It's a little exaggerated but there is an African species that grows palm sized.

They're not dangerous, though I think I read if you have them for a pet you can feed them cat or dog food. ^_^' I'd be afraid something that can eat that and have prickly claw legs wouldn't be against a nibble if it was hungry.
