I went to a petshop today to get some bird seeds for my budgies, and I saw these tiny quails. And I started shrieking to mom "I GOTTA HAVE THEM MOM, YTOU DON'T GET IT. I NEED THEM."
And oddly enough she was ok with ti?? She already said 3 budgies in a small apartment was enough + Im not even allowed to have animals but the landlord doesn't care??
So yeah I have these two babies now. Gonna introduce them to my birds tomorrow. The budgies already climbed on their cage. Curious as fuck.
The white one "got out" when I was cleaning, and when I turned around it stood on the top of my couch, flew to the roof, landed in my kitchen sink, ran to ym bed, and took a shit on my bed.
I love these poof balls already.
One thing though, how can I tell which is male or female based on appearance/behaviour?? I wanna name the male Pilkington.
If you guys got any pro Quail tips please share! :D

I googled too and found maybe something useful? http://thedalesquails.weebly.com/ch.....ed-quails.html
I'm not sure they're the same type, but Chinese Painted Quail and Chinese Button Quail are apparently the same thing, and that's what came up when I searched Chinese Dwarf Quail. haha
It seems to me that if these are the same type, then you've got a white mutation and a Tuxedo mutation, and apparently the white is impossible to sex on appearance, only through behavior or dna testing. Though the piebald MAY be identifiable before reaching maturity... judging by what that page says anyhow.
Cuties regardless!!!

Oh my god you got a Tuxedo ;A;, the white one is a texas A & M. Those are either button quails or Coturnix Quails, we've had our coturnix for a few years. You're gonna want to get them a cage that you can remove the bottom out of with a fine wire grate for them to poop on so they aren't standing in their own poop (unless you want to spot clean constantly) You'll also want to get them a good sized litter box with quail safe dust in it so they can dust bathe, or you can try filling it with carefresh bedding, our quails love it and dust bathe in it all the time. You'll also want to make sure they have a big set up, they need lots of room to run around. IT also needs a soft because quails are prone to bonking, which is popping straight up into the air. They can jump as high as 5-6 feet straight up so if the roof is low they have a risk of seriously injuring themselves or even breaking their necks. Depending on the temperature you may also want to get them a heat lamp, and at very least a lamp with UVB so they can get the vitamins they need. If they are button quails, they will want a lot of good sized hides. If they are Coturnix, they most likely won't utilize hides like the one on the right in this picture, except to into for a few minutes and then leave, or to literately hide in if they get scared.
They aren't really a bird you can handle much, in 95% of cases handling literately terrifies them and can have really negative effects on their health stress wise. You'll also want to be sure your parakeets aren't harassing them too much, or jumping on them as that seriously stresses them out. They ARE however a bird you can clicker train! They are very intelligent and are very eager treat eaters.
If they are Coturnix you'll need to find a place that can supply you with Layer Crumble, they can't eat pigeon food or other bird food. They do however love small mealworms! As well as egg, and crushed up boiled egg shells for calcium. If they are button quails you can find a good write up of their diet here - http://www.cyberquail.com/homepage.html
Hopefully you got 2 girls, because you got a male, he will beat the crap out of the girl when they get older, and potentially kill her (or she'll fight back and kill him). Same goes if you have two boys, they will fight. Also the boys will get LOUD, they crow and you would be amazed just what volume these little bread buns can get to.
Both birds are a lot of work and money to care for but they are a joy to have and we love our girls greatly <3 They sadly have fairly short life spans but their great birds!

whoops, typoed, the coturnix need the grate to run on, button quails will be too small to use a floor grate, and the cage needs a soft roof
Im pretty sure these guys are button quails, so the link I left should give you all the info you need on them, best luck with your birds!

Oh wow this is alot of useful info! I honestly don't have much experience with these birds, and the pet handlers over at the store didn't know much about them either.. They barely knew which food they were supposed to eat except the worms, but they would have to order them in especially for me :|
Now Im afraid of not being able to care for them if they are different genders, or species :S I don't have much space in my apartment so I can't get a big cage, but I will let them walk around in my apartment and get used to everything. When I bought the, there was a budgie in their cage so they are used to the specie. My other budgies were really curious about them, and I'm going to introduce them more tomorrow and hope that they will behave!
So far these two have been cleaning each others feather, dust bathing, silently peeping and just been eating. The white one is the most active, but the tuxedo one haven't aten anything I think.... and it sits still alot.
How long do they live? Im gonna ask the pet store people again tomorrow about the mealworms and lamps.
Thank you for all the info!

The tuxedo one is probably a bit stressed out. We have one white girl who is unfortunately has a bit of trauma so she spends a lot of time just kind of sitting still and spacing out when she feels she's in danger. Is she ruffled up?
And that works, we do much the same with our girls of letting them run around and explore the apartment, and then they run back to their cage when they want back in. And don't worry! A lot of people keep buttons in aviaries with birds like budgies, the only thing you really have to watch out for is the budgies biting at their feet or sitting on them haha.
Cleaning each other and dust bathing is a good sign though! Happy quails love to dust bathe.
2-4 years seems to be the average lifespan for both buttons and coturnix, the females do suffer from a shorter one due to egg laying though, so if you keep them from egg laying too much they will probably live longer lives.
I don't know if male on female aggression is nearly as bad with buttons as it is with coturnix, so you might be fine if you only have one male, but if you have two you may have a problem. unfortunately with the Tuxedo and A&M colours, the indicators of the quails gender are kind of lost, so you may have to wait a while and see if one starts crowing or making a sort of 'rrrr'ing noise, almost like a low growl.

This one is only ruffled up when it is resting, otherwise it appears a bit thin, withdrawing the feathers closer to the body or something. But earlier today it seemed more calm.
I guess I need to make some ladders for them, since I can't have the cage on the floor just yet, but they are placed on the desk next to my birds. Im afraid they will fall down from there though so Im gonna let them out on the floor once I have checked every corner of the room, so thyey won't get stuck inbetween the furniture.
I hope they're not agressive towards each other..if that happens, I'll just have to place one of them in the budgie cage!
They ahve been making lots of tiny noises and sort of a long rruuuUUrrr sound, but I don't know which one it was :''D

You will learn soon enough! Haha boys will start crowing before they beat up each other so they'll make them self known in due time if they're boys.
Also I'd suggest getting like a guinea pig ladder or bridge or something for them something without holes so they can't get their toes or legs caught in them. THey don't have feet for perching so things like thin poles can be hard for them to use and grip and they will literately roll. They're compact birds so they are prone to bowling over, you may see this when one pops in the air and flutters to land, one of ours rolls when she lands some times. They're like little feathered balls haha.
And I'd be cautious about putting one in the budgie cage unless it has a looot of running around space and you're totally sure the budgies won't be territorial with the bird.
And yeah when they're out and about it might be worth just lowering the cage to the floor when they get out for their safety.

Ahh well that's good to know though.
Yeah I have ladder things but they are made for hamsters or something, so they do have isues with getting out of the cage :S Gonna fix that too!
I tried slowly putting my hand in the cage yesterday, sat there for nearly 2 hours and in the end both of them were walking and pecking sand of my hand! The youngest female budgie flew over and sat on the cage too, just watching them from below.
Today Im going to try repeat, just getting my hand in and let them get used to it a bit more before they explore. While Im writing this the female budgie is at their cage again, poking her beak between the bars while the white quail just stretches it's neck and pokes it's beak between the bars as well ahah.
Also I got some meal worms and they went nuts over them :D

A good way to work around them being hand shy is by offering them food by hand all the time, treats included, so you're definitely going in the right direction! It took a good while but at this point half the time the quails come running when we put our hands in the cage! Food is definitely the way to these birds hearts and trust haha.
I bought 50 grams of meal worms,so now they'll have a ton of treats now and then! Had to get them their own box to stay in cause there are so many ahah. I found a spot for the quails to be, in my bathroom with these hamster...walls that they can get over only if they get startled enough to fly. They have been running around in there for hours now and they seem really calm. Im going to spend some time in there with them later, cause they hide behind the shower door when I approach them ahah
