There is a story to this. So, I've been in charge of the balloon purchases for my department for the better part of a year or so. These balloons include various happy birthday, love, get well soon, congratulations, etc. types of mylar balloons in various sizes.
When I'd started I'd noticed a strange lack of balloons for young girls. Don't get me wrong we have Dora and Hello Kitty. The possibility of getting in princess balloons is there but, from what I can tell they've ceased letting us order a group Disney princess birthday balloon and instead gone to separate princess birthday balloons (I guess if you really like Ariel or Belle or something that's cool but, to me I prefer a dynamic group shot. Plus that tends to sell better. For example, Justice League or Avengers balloons do sell better than just Batman or Spiderman balloons at my store).
Dora sales were good but are now tanking horribly. Hello Kitty is still doing well but, I wanted to get something for some more variety. So I thought, what was one of the more popular shows for girls but My Little Pony.
So on a recent call with the company that we order our balloons from they said they didn't have any MLP balloons but, if the bakery made cakes featuring characters from said show it would be easier to get the balloons added to the next catalog.
A week later I was having lunch with a family member who is an assistant bakery manager and I asked her about it, relaying my balloon story to her. She said she'd just ordered some rings for mlp cupcakes and that she thought they did cakes as well but, she hadn't made one while at the store she's at (She's newly promoted and at a new store) but she'd get back to me on it.
So today, I got a text from her asking if I was home, which I wasn't. When I got home I noticed a box in the fridge which wasn't there before. Upon opening the box I found this small cake with the word "Derp," on it and two figure perched precariously on it with a small ring in front of it. It was as if it was saying, "Yes, we do have the toys to add to mlp cakes." If they have the toys they probably have an actual pattern they can follow too, but this just proved a point.
And so, that's how this cake came to be. Tomorrow I'll put in a call to the balloon company to let them know that it would be a good idea for cross merchandizing purposes to put some mlp balloons in the next catalog.
