The first of my three submissions to Losing Altitude! These tiny little paintings are only about 1.5-2 cm high, done on little decorative spoons in acrylic paint and sealed with a satin enamel.
South Island Rock Wren (Xenicus gilviventris)- adult male (left) and adult female (right).
This charming little bird is one of only two surviving species of the family Acanthisittidae, the New Zealand Wrens. Sadly, this species, like many other endemic New Zealand species, is considered vulnerable. They are found on rocky alpine slopes. where the feed mainly on insects.
