That and the fact that you are forced to watch this old cartoon that was played during the same time period. Also had nothing to do with Digimon besides the fact that it was played on the same station as FOX. Basically used the digimon movie to promote the lame and poorly made cartoon.
Add that to the fact that the movie was split into 3 smaller movies that barely tied together and you would be completely lost if you never watched the series....
It made for a bad ....very bad movie. However there are movies that were made after this that were actually good.
