I think they were just friends for a time, but at some point they decided to make it official. On Rick's Twitter, you can see Karishad refer Rick as his BF.

Hah! Reminds me of college. Most of the folks on my dorm floor were like Kari. "Why are you moving around the common room via standing on the furniture?" "The floor is lava!" And separately, taking a shower in one of the mens shower stalls, hear a clucking coming into the tiled room, guy with viking helmet tears off shower curtain, yells "I heard you needed a chicken!" and tosses agitated bird at person taking shower.
