Found out that the real engine had a graphite colored smokebox, so I repainted it to make it correct. I also repainted the whistle per the prototype color. The bell however was originally painted black, so I left that alone.

With mine, I cut the tire off of it and built a pick up wiper kinda like this guy: http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums.....ps95a09e7d.jpg
Along with that on the two back wheels and the TCS, I think I have it running as good as it will ever be. The motor drive isn't exactly the smoothest, but its a hell of a lot better than it once was.
Boy, you'd think after 20 years they would improve the model a little more lol...

I modified mine, I have the mid-2000's release of the Weyerhauser saddletanker, like yours, but I took apart the gear train, & filed the flashing/burrs off the main upper gearings. Then I cleaned off all the factory white lube they slap all over the inside gear towers, & put it back together dry. I then put 3 drops of this high-temp "turbine oil" from a company called Zoom Spout (I'll try for a photo of that bottle later). The thing runs as smooth as a swiss watch now.
I left the tires on mine simply because of the groove the tire sits it would have caused havoc with my code 83 handlaid trackage. If I cut the tires off, I'd have to then get a basket case model to replace the entire driver with, & thus also sacrificing it's ability to pull any more then 8 cars.

Is there any way you can make a video of it running so I can see how it looks now? Is there also a picture you can show me of where the flash/burrs were? I would love to know what to look for so I can see if mine has that issue.
Why would a groove cause havoc to your code 83 track? Unless your wheel flanges are a lot deeper than mine, it shouldn't cause any problems. The club I belong to uses code 83 and 70. I haven't had any issues without the tire gone.

I can try. I don't really want to take mine all back apart again, but I'll look for an exploded diagram to put some arrows on.
The groove on code 83 would catch in the frogs on the Walthers Shinsora(sp?) turnout frogs, it would also slip on the hills/grades due to its light weight. It's got much better pulling power with the tire, but without it, it'll only pull about 8 loaded log bunks on a 2% grade.
Shoot me a note & I'll try to get it video'd sometime this week.
