Over 20 years ago there was a fracas in SF fandom, not between two clicques in fandom (as usual), but within the same clique. It broke up into two groups, and after about a year of acrimonious exchanges, the one led by a fan named Bergeron had clearly lost. Begeron had been one of the leading lights of the 1950's, and that was probably one reason the affair was such a shock. If even the Giants of Yesteryear can be br(ought down in a feud, who's safe from a fall? Who can be trusted not to turn out to be a jerk? As well as a noted writer and editor of fanzines, Bergeron was also a "fine arts" type of artist who embellished his own zines with Mondriaan like abstracts in several colours. He was also rich and could afford to in that pre-digital age.) After about a year of hanging on and cultivating people from other cliques in fandom, Bergeron disappeared. The other clique lasted several years longer as a clique and gradually slipped out of the spotlight as they persued various other interests. I was a neutral through all this, but one thing I did by way of a comment was this cover. I used Bergeron's style and portrayed one of the other clique thumbing her nose, as a satire on both parties. Curiusly, it was Bergeron who received the satire with the best grave. Nobody esle would touch it, and the art wasn't published until only a couple of years ago. There was a hand coloured version of this as well as the b/w, but this is a new colouring, done in Photoshop only last month. Note the numbers for colouring, part of the joke on Bergeron's fine art pretentions.
