"Alright, here's an' oldie, but a goodie. Got a friend 'o mine that RPG's wit' us on th' weekends, he needed a character t'play in a 'Teen Heroes' campaign. He was fresh outta ideas, on account'a he'd been through a tough time. So, I gave him th' basics on this li'l gem. Super strong, nigh-invuln'rability, flight, an' some spiffy cosmic energy powers.
"The catch? She's really a 16-year-old skater girl wit' a pair 'o ancient armbands that she strikes t'gether all Linda Carter-style t'change.
"Well, he takes to it like a duck t'water, but decides t'change her species t'human. Don' know why anyone'd WANT t'play as a human, but whatever floats yer boat, y'know?"

And, with many liberties taken for creative license, that was about the way it went. The two of us spent some time trying to think of a "superhero-y" name that (A) sounded good, and (B) hadn't been taken already. The word "nia" came up, as I had remembered it from somewhere to mean "purpose" in some African language. We figured it was obscure enough to sound good AND have the desired meaning, so we threw a "mighty" onto the front, and thus was born the Mighty Nia.
Funny thing is, I found out just today that Nia is also an Irish name meaning "female champion". Ain't THAT a coincidence.
