This replica is consistent with the first Soviet satellite Sputnik 1, which carried no living creatures. Laika flew on Sputnik 2 which had an original mission time of 10 days with a humane euthanization of Laika occurring on the last day. Upon achieving orbit, the common core booster stage failed to separate from Sputnik and thus prevented the operation of the cooling system that was necessary for Laika's survival. At T+7 hours out of 10 days, the mission was terminated as telemetry indicated Laika had succumbed to the intense heating of the capsule by the sun. Sputnik 2 continued on for 162 days, completing 2570 orbits, before reentering the Earth's atmosphere.
