Originally an idea for a full novel, I decided to change this piece into a shorter story and post it online. Hopefully, it'll come out well. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
Larathe had caught several glimpses of the humans in his travels. At one point, he had even attempted to interact with them, though it ended poorly. Opting to live off the land in the woods, he had made his way away from the city of humans and settled down in a nice, quiet spot where he wouldn't be disturbed.
It didn't last long, however. The wolf found himself running for his life as a human chased him down, intent on ridding the land of this strange, creature.
Prologue:
Larathe ran through the woods, his heart racing as he pushed through the undergrowth. This couldn’t be happening…not with how far he had been from the city. The sound of heavy footfalls reached his ears and he felt his pulse quicken even further. Ahead of him there would be a break in the forest. If he was fast enough, perhaps he could lose his pursuers before they had a clear shot. He hesitated for a moment before sprinting out into the open. Only one way to find out…
“What is it?”
An elderly man knelt over the strange creature, a rifle slung over his shoulder. “Strange, that’s what.” He said, taking a step back. “I say we kill it.”
“What? Why? It’s mostly dead anyway.”
“So we put it out of its misery.”
“A mercy kill, huh?”
The man looked over at the younger male beside him. “Ya ever hear ‘bout them stories of were-beasts, Lance?”
“Yeah, but…this thing isn’t a threat to anyone anymore anyway.”
“They’re vicious beasts boy. They’ll kill ya on sight if they had the chance.”
The young man looked down at the wolf, tapping its paw with his foot. “I don’t think this thing is in any shape to do any killing,” he said. “Give me a hand will you? I’m going to bring it home with me.”
“You’ve lost yer mind.”
“Have I?”
“Soon as it wakes it’ll kill ya.”
“So I’ll bind it before it wakes. I might hunt, but I’m also a surgeon.”
“Your call boy…I’ll help it to yer truck but I’m not comin’ to visit fer a while.”
Lance chuckled. “I’m not asking you to. Gimme a hand.”
