Although it may seem primitive for a highly advanced species like the Cynids, they use trains to ferry supplies, prisoners, and food gathered from the front lines back to to the Nexus City for processing. Each train has its own division of Hack and Therian class soldiers, and a maintenance crew of thralls.

This reminds me of a story I once read about a dying civilization whose members were all hooked up into a virtual reality simulation, and the computer would grant them wishes, and a bunch of them banded together to use their wishes to wish into existence a train that could take them to other worlds.
