This is a piece I've been working on for a while, on and off. I don't work on it that often since I don't yet have a group in line to perform or record it just yet so I focus on other pieces.
Anyway, this is a piece I was working on, inspired by one of the characters by
meridias
The piece is supposed to portray mystical, yet beautiful confusion. The melodic material is built in combinations of minor seconds and minor thirds rather than a scale. The harmonies are sets of three notes, minor and major seconds apart, often a tritone away from each other or minor third. For example, the first chord in the strings has two groups. E,F#,G is the upper triad, and A,B,C# is the lower triad, and there is an Eb in the bass. The second has a third on the upper triad, it is Ab,G,Eb while that space that is added in the upper triad is reduced in the lower triad which is a clutter of Bb,B, and C, and Bb is in the bass.
The harp has two sets of pedal setups, made to emphasize the minor seconds and thirds and a mystical scale which I made up and often use. The setup for the harp in the first flourish is C#,D,Eb,F#,G,A,B and in the second flourish the pedals are reset to make the tuning of the strings C,D,Eb,Fb,G#,A#,B.
The time signature switches between 5/4 and 6/4 literally in every measure. Then, while most rhythms are in quarters, eighths, and sixteenth notes, there are a lot of triplets and other duple-rhythms so that the sense of time and beat is often lost, intentionally.
One of the more difficult things about writing for this ensemble is the fact that the oboe really does not blend well, it's the nature of the instrument, it is very soloistic so it stands out more than the strings and harp, and I want to avoid making it sound like a chamber oboe concerto.
I want to eventually expand this into a three movement piece of about 25 minutes in length and eventually of course, have it performed and/or recorded by a professional group.
