This is basically concept art for a character of mine that I've now purchased a doll to customize into. I'm part of the ball-jointed doll hobby. It's a long story, but yeah.
Essentially his character is a churchgrim that finds a young teenager that has ran away from home in his graveyard. (legend had it that the first person to be buried in a graveyard had to look after all the souls that came after them, so it was customary in England to sacrifice a pure black dog for this purpose. The dog would then be the first "person" buried and no human would be cursed with that task.
Since no one currently attends his church since it is abandoned and therefore there will be no more souls in need of shepherding in his graveyard, he follows the boy. He appears either as a dog or as a young man when with Aiden (the boy he protects) but could probably take any form that would make those in his care feel comfortable.
I need to play with the colors a bit (I super screwed up his lips) but this is sort of what I want Alexander to look like. He’s a ghostly sort of creature so I wanted muted colors, more grays and browns than blues, I don’t want him icy. He has dark circles because he’s literally a watchdog and wouldn’t get much sleep.
The important part is the eyebrows. I definitely want them very thick at the base and then tapering outward, reminiscent of a dog’s eyebrows.
I’m really not happy with this drawing. I sped through it, but the colors are pretty good and I think I’ve put on all the features I think he would have. He doesn’t look as gentle as I’d like and I drew the clasp backward’s on the belt and ugh.

Ooh, interesting story here. Love the design!
Didn't know they had those grims in England, I thought it was a Scandinavian thing... Live and learn! ^u^
If you're trying to make him look gentle, what I'd do is angle the head a bit, put a curve on the neck, something that makes his head look a little mobile on the ball joint. It won't be an issue when you make the model, of course, unless you want the head to flop like a dog and rattle a bit? ^^"
You know, I'm actually sorta interested in how you'd customize a doll like this... If you post WIPS, lmk, 'k? <3

I have the doll, actually, and gosh he's much more solid than my other doll as far as posing! I don't have the skill to paint him (or the supplies, it's a little cost-prohibitive to customize just one or two dolls) so I'm going to send him to a long-time friend in the hobby to paint him. This is a mock-up of the type of paint I want (and the wig as it were, she's recently taken up making mohair wigs as well) most of my customization in the hobby has been making clothing and jewelry. I really like taking photographs of them, they've really helped me improve my photography over the years.
I haven't taken many pictures of this boy yet though, I'm neck deep in cosplay so I haven't had the chance to make him any of his own clothes yet, he's currently borrowing from the other doll heavily and they are different sizes so it doesn't quite work. Anyway, the doll on the right is Alexander, and the left is Aiden: http://gardenvarietykiss.tumblr.com.....-home-i-havent
Ha ha, I have to be careful or I get long-winded as this is a long-time passion of mine that I haven't had too much time to devote to it. It's hard to pull everything out and work on them and keep from causing a scene. :)

Opaque paints can run a bit towards the expensive side, I'm with you on that.
I wish you luck with this, because it sounds damn interesting ^u^
Wow, he looks pale enough already! (How often do you post on tumblr? My inbox is overflowing at the moment, and I'm trying to cut down my total blogs to watch by how often they post...)
Passions are cool, it's cool. It's fun to see! ^u^ Really innushten'lookin'.

I'm not a flood poster, but I do post fairly frequently. There's really no rhyme or reason to what I post or reblog though.
I'm really excited to finally have both together so that I can actually build their world a bit. With only one it would have been very difficult to get across any of his story, but Now I have some leg room.

I'm starting to be aware that I post too much. I also have about a daily two-hour dashboard, so that's a pain to maintain... Most of it's feminism and animation stuff, with a couple broadway and bad joke posts I reblog from my sister, political debates, and typical college whininess.
Ah, nice! Keep exploring this wee doll universe, it sounds really fun ^u^
