WHEN WAS THIS DOLL MADE?
I first ordered this plushie mid January of 2013. It was finished and arrived just under two months later in early March of 2013.
WAS THIS DOLL A PROTOTYPE?
Nope, it was a custom commission.
COMMUNICATION
The communication with this artist was excellent. As a commissioner, and a picky one at that, I sent lengthy messages with how I wanted the plushie to look, how the character's markings went, etc, and they were very eager and willing to work with me. I had requested to see WIP images, and they delivered and provided me with progress photos to let me see how the plushie was coming together.
DID THEY MEET YOUR DEADLINE?
I didn't have a deadline, but to receive the finished plushie less than two months after I had first ordered it (after having ordered a plushie from someone else and having to wait nearly six for theirs), was a great surprise.
HOW WAS THE ART DOLL PACKAGED?
It's been a year so I forgot exactly what it was packaged in, but if I recall correctly it was in a medium-sized box with packaging peanuts, and was quite secure.
DID YOUR DOLL ARRIVE IN ONE PIECE?
Yes. It was in perfect condition when I took it out of the box.
WAS YOUR DOLL SEWN?
The doll is made of acrylic yarn, so it was crocheted, and it holds together beautifully and there are no rips, tears, holes, etc.
IS YOUR DOLL FLOPPY STYLE OR ARTICULATED?
The plushie is firm enough to hold itself up on its own and keep its shape, but is squishable and huggable, like a pillow, so a great balance between firm and floppy. Its legs and tail are bendable/poseable, though the legs don't keep the new shape, they go back to normal when no longer posed.
STABILITY, IS YOUR DOLL STABLE?
Standing up on all four legs, it's not that incredibly stable and is slightly precariously balanced. However, he looks better either sitting down or laying down anyways, and when he is doing either one or the other he is perfectly stable, firm, and doesn't budge an inch.
DOLL DETAIL
Aside from the eyes, all of him is made of acrylic yarn. The eyes aren't hand-made, aside from the eyelids that were added, but they are high quality and you can't tell how they're attached to his face. They're still just as clear and well-attached as the day I got him. In addition, the artist added a "mouth/jaw" to the plushie, which can be pushed shut or wedged open to give him some expression.
FABRIC DETAILING
My character had some very specific and slightly complicated markings, so I really wanted them to match as best as possible, and the artist did just that. The markings were hand-sewn on, on top of the original acrylic yarn, so they're perfectly-formed and well done. The mane is also nicely made, it was evenly trimmed to shape and the bangs are easy to form as I like, but also stay in place.
MATERIALS
It's been over a year and, with some light use, the plushie hasn't lost a single strand of yarn. The eyes are still firmly in place, and the long strands of yarn for the mane are still in place. I believe the style of this type of doll/plushie make is called "Amigurumi", a crocheted and stuffed toy. I'm not sure what he is stuffed with, but it works well with the amount of firmness versus huggability that I was looking for.
WOULD YOU BUY FROM AGAIN OR RECOMMEND?
Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I do plan on buying from them again, and very soon, and would recommend them to anyone looking for a plush.
FINAL SCORE OUT OF 5
5/5
This was an amazingly successful commission, the artist captured my character perfectly and turned him into an adorable plushie with both integrity to the craft and durability to make it both ideal for showing off and great to just take down from my shelf and give it a good hug every once in a while. The price and turnaround time were both unbeatable.
