Three Remotes and a Pen (2004)
Original comments:
One day, I was at home listening to something penned by Elliot Goldenthal for "Frida", with Lila Downs singing wonderfully on it, when I glanced down on my bed and saw that three different remote controls (one for the air conditioning, one for the TV, one for the radio, and I'm a fairly messy person) and a blue-ink gel pen arranged on a plant-patterned sheet in such a way that I started seeing things grow out of them. I'm not ashamed to admit, it was a very "Frida" (the movie, at least) moment.
I started with a basic outline of the remotes and the pen, then started working on it, to the atmosphere of some Mexican-flavoured music. It grew, it was penned in, pencil-swished then penned again, I added detail after detail until it got too big for that part of my sketchbook. When I was done, I had already burned a few hours past midnight.
I love this piece very much, and am proud of what it's turned out to be.
(I forgot to add, while typing for the previous submission, that I didn't feel very comfortable working at my drawing in framed foundations, which might put a chink in hope for being a comic person, unless I get an obscenely lucky streak and get a percent of Bill Sienkewicz's talent. So, it's gonna be rare that I frame up my art, and maybe it'll turn out for the better. As a signature, maybe?)
