Sometimes when people ask 'so, what do you do for a living' and i have to say... um... illustrator... yeah... I feel really awkward about my choices in life. ^^; But i like what i do TTwTT It pays bills, its fun, and its spiritually relieving! ... its just not all that grown up. *sighs*
Ages ago i got to the point with my character rendering style where i was happy with it. I can do all sorts of style but i like anime toon style so thats the one i use and but my efforts have been pored into learning how to write stories...
If my style stays too samey for ages people will see me as having gone stagnant?
There is still heaps more i want to do with my art... though most of it is more esoteric, like learn framing and presentation, get to a faster production speed, improve my knowledge with font types and design in general...
I mean, you can always get better at art, but im trying to avoid thinking of art as just a matter of mastering lighting/anatomy and making heaps of money... There are so many more facets to art... Perhaps the fact that all my heroes are all cartoonist makes me feel comfortable with having a less fully rendered style... but.. Ugh. i ramble. its late again ^^;
I guess im probably just fighting the thought that a simple and cartoony signature style = a less valuable style than a complex one...
*muses* Oh well, que cera~

Its just my favorite in all the world. I just got my hands on the dragon magazine special edition featuring the guy who does project ako, and another art book by the chick who does the charachter art the animated ranma seriese. *swoons* there really isnt anything like the classics
i love your style hun, your style has that beautiful classic anime feel which alot of artist cant do. your style has a charm and always give me that nostalgia feeling, which always brings a smile to my face and make me wanna work harder to achieve this in my arts
Dont let the pressure of others make you feel what you do is embrassing or not grown up, at least your being creative, keeping your mind stimulated and healthy and making some cash. At least your not wasting the days with just watching tv and letting time go by.

i think we all go through feeling like that, for me it gets worse the older i get, couple years time im gonna be 30 and relising that hitting me hard at the moment i see everyone else my age group with fancy jobs, a house, kids. but if i stopped collecting anime and drawing i wouldn't be me. Try not to think whats at the end of it no one knows what will happen plus you'll end up wasting time on what ifs, i know ive done that alot it just spoils my day and kills my motivation enjoy each day as it comes.
Fuck that, being able to go against the grain and make a living doing what you love is like the most adult thing you could do! The Dalai Lama would be super proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself!
I cant wait to see more of your art, and I hope to get more chances to commission you! Keep it up Nai, we're cheering you on!

>w< i think the dali lama would have a heart attack if he saw my porn stash, but thank you >^^<. its just that i keep getting older and my life keeps moving forward, it was kinda cool when i was 16 and good at anime, but one day ill be a wrinkly old lady who is still quoting pokemon and guyver.... not sure itll be so cute then XD idk... maybe its not that bad
I think that there's a point where we have to be happy with our own growth no matter what anyone else says. The thing is, people are so diverse that you'll quite rarely get a true consensus from them, so worrying about if some people think you've gone stagnant causes you to overlook the folks who don't think that way. It's kind of a natural human bias. We think things are wrong so we look for things that confirm that belief and then act on that. That's ok though, as long as it's used constructively. The really important part was that if *you* think there's something wrong, then do something to fix it. Grow a bit in the direction to fix it! Maybe folks won't see that growth, but does that really matter? You've solved a problem for yourself on your own terms!
For the record: I love your work and can't wait to see where you go with it next!

I winder whats out there for me too. i guess it just feels wierd not to have an idea there. If i was lucky it would be that comicing gets some more momentum and i can focus more on that. ^^ *sihgs* but i still suck at story telling as it stands... i mean, have a LONG way to go ><;
ive never been any good at soaking criticisms, they just feel discouraging to me. ^^ i do tend to fixate on the negative for sure, but i try not to let it sway me from my core values <3< i just get introspective sometimes i guess. ^^; its still nice to hear from you. your comments always have a lot of love and thought to them *nod nod hugs*

personally i cant really agree to the less cartoony stile i mean look at ranma1/2 almost idinticle stile and that things till popular as hell today >.> -hides all 8 seasons behind me slowly- with what iv noticed is it mostly comes down to character personality and story and how the plots move and character interact. i mean detail is nice to a pint but it also can make something look over dun as well. -hugs- so like you said id focus more on my fonts and story telling at this point you have a memorable stile as is and one i think would be very popular in mainstream.
..... hope that macks since nai nai =^-^= -super uber hugs and gives the lil munsta a huge teddy to wrars and dominate the words with- O.O

You can pay your bills.
You have fun at your work.
It's even spiritually fullfilling?
What is not grown-up about it? Given, people might not recognize it that way, but it is. I can understand you. I'm a trained salesman with 15 years of experience and I still get looked down, because 12 years of them were in a comic shop. It's hard, but in many of the important basics there is no difference between selling comics or jewelery. It's the same with art. The only difference between you and Picasso is that Picasso has become famous, but in the end you do the same work.
Also, few artists manage to master even the basics of drawing comics, as this is a very different skill, even if it has the same basics.
As for the art style. I'm still reading Gold Digger and have for years now and what Fred Perry has done with his manga style that surpases much japanese artists have done. Like in martial arts scenes, were you can actually follow the moves of the combatants. Just one example of what he has been doing. There is also the fact that him 'borrowing' from other sources does not dimish his comic as he manages to infuse then with new ideas. On one page of his last comic he showed how a Thunderbirds series could be enhanced today for example.
And to (roughly) quote Rod Espinosa: Drawing comics is the same as making a movie. There is only one difference. Comics have an unlimited budget.
Basicly? Don't put yourself down and don't let others put you down. All artists are already their own worst critics.
And if I did not make much sense, maybe this does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikAb-NYkseI&feature=player_embedded

NUUU!!! *GLOMPS* Nu!!! Your art ish your own style! it ish great and magnificent! I don;t think stale can ever apply to someone whom loves what they do and does it to the best of their abilities! Never be awkward about your decisions if they bring you happines aaaaand pay the bills! *snuggles and squeeees* You are super awesomes! ALSO YAY WEDDIIIIING!!! *Tosses sparkalies into the air and boops your tummy with glee*
Even if you reach a point where you're happy with your style, you will unconsciously change it over time. But even so, you will likely retain trademarks that will consistently show up in your work and mark it as yours.
The best example of this that I can recall is between two manga by the same artist whose name I can't recall: A.I. Love You and Love Hina. Same guy, almost completely different different styles. But you could still tell it was him. I found it very interesting to compare the two styles and see how he'd improved. :D

But Nai, you're forgetting the most important aspect of having a signature style: It makes you stand out! I'm not saying you shouldn't try out something new occasionally since that keeps things fresh, but when your work becomes synonymous with you that's already an amazing leap for a prospect~
Keep your chin up woman. <3

If it is paying the bills, and you adore what you do, then there's nothing wrong with it at all. And considering the fact that you almost always seem as if you are being introspective when it comes to your work, trying to figure out ways in which to improve this, that, and everything else over time, as well as what aspects of your art you can further yourself...quite frankly, I don't think you have anything to worry about. You're already considering everything you can and should consider, and it's that sort of dedication and drive to make yourself even better than before that makes you that much stronger.
In other words, just keep moving forward. So long as the finances are fantastic and everything else is going well, you need not concern yourself with what anyone else thinks of your profession. :3

Do what makes you feel right!
I gotta say, it's rare to find someone who will do amazing artwork and live up to the old-school traditional style. I absolutely love your work haha, and I don't think it would ever go stagnant, but you know it is all up to you in the end. Whatever you do, people will love. Whether older fans leave and new ones come, you will still have a good fanbase as you are very talented!
I'm always awkward about it when random people ask me as well. But hey, if you're bringing home the bacon and happy, what's wrong with that?

There's no shame in being an illustrator no matter the style you choice to to work in. Art is art in my book and if you can live off it and be happy then you got something special right there that most people would love to be able to do. Don't let anyone make you feel awkward about that =)
Well over time I've just gotten a bit more cynical so I reached the point as long as I enjoy it other people's opinions don't really matter to me. Can't please everyone and expect them to see the beauty of your work sadly. I did a paper on a similar subject back in college on how some people don't view things as art, mostly illustrations versus the classical aspect of art. Anime/manga art style get's this treatment a lot sadly due to it's popularity and origins.
I absolutely love your style and would honestly feel somewhat saddened if you decided to drastically alter the way you draw all of a sudden. I don't really see it as "stagnant" to stick with one style, that's how a lot of artists become well known. Look at the ElfQuest series, for example; Wendy's style really hasn't changed at all since it's inception. she may have improved from an artistic standpoint, sure, but the core of her art style hasn't changed.
Oh man, dont you know how to push my buttons! Elfquest was like... my first and most favoriteststststss comic~~~~ *wags* I couldn't tell you if it was elfquest or ranma half i like more, i wouldn't compare them! *goes on an hours ramble on how cool elfquest and windi pini is* I always respected those guys from the bottom of my heart and secretly i want to build something like that with Corillion >w< *wags* ... MmmMmmmm skywise.... *drools and goes to her happy place*
XD Nai fanbase? I thought i you guys had starved to death out of neglect >x<!!! Ive been so busy with life, i havent had the patience of mind it takes to interact with any of my online friends... my IRL ones too for that matter in like... ages!!! But i miss chatting with people on FA and on livestream and such.
Ahh well that my dear is all about being creative with your woooords
Take me for example, I work in a call center as a "Team Coach" or someone that goes "You failed a call, here's why, don't do it again"
Now how would I word what I do to someone I want to "impress"?
"I work in the Fraud Prevention Department for *insert credit card name*, and I help ensure that agents are giving quality service to our card members why guiding them to ensuring the best customer service with speed and accuracy."

I know right, but then again its rlly stoepid, cause rlly art is a real job, just a bit more creative and involves more talent :P you can be very proud on yourself that you can earn a living from art ♥ not everyone can say the same about their job to be happy what they do for their living O_O *huggs*
