It kind of burns, similar to hot sauce really, but only for a few minutes. I've even been sprayed directly in the eyes several times and found the blindness effect is only from having to blink so damned much and having to cry the musk out. That burnt significantly more intensely than spray on the skin of course.
The kind of skunk musk you can order in bottles has been diluted with water and something else so it doesn't irritate the skin. There's no telling if anyone would have an allergy to it though since it's only sold to a very small niche market so I doubt they've been able to test it. I had a skunk fan let me smell a bottle of his skunk scent perfume and it wasn't too bad in the diluted form. I've never been sprayed directly though I've had to wash a dog that got sprayed and being that close to the scent was causing my eyes to water up and nausea swelled.
