Easter... a time of 'rebirth'... of family gatherings... when tender moments are shared around the dinner table...
So, naturally, I'm posting a picture of myself, taken at Thanksgiving!
To be honest, I don't have any 'photo-ops' to offer, revolving around the Easter holiday (or even Passover, for that matter). So, instead, for this 'Throwback Thursday', I'm sharing a snapshot of yours truly, seated in front of a buffet table in the living room of my old home in Elmont, NY, in preparation to celebrate the Thanksgiving of 1990.
1990 was a very significant year for me. A few months earlier, I got 'laid off' from the art department of Rugby-Darby Pharmaceuticals (after working for them since the mid-1980s), and I still hadn't found other work for six months. (You'll also notice that I'd shaved off my beard - which I'd sported earlier in the year - in the hope that a youthful appearance might help me land another vocation.)
And even though we, as a family, had gathered for the annual feast, it wasn't going to be the same as in past Thanksgivings. For starters, my brother Glenn had already been living in Florida for two years, and was unable to come up to Elmont for the holiday. And, even more ironic, this would turn out to be the last Thanksgiving I'd spend with my father, Joaquin Martinez, as he would eventually pass away the following May in 1991.
But I always had such fond memories of the Thanksgivings we used to spend as a whole family, back in Elmont. Dad would cook the turkey, Mom would set the dining room table, and sister Rhonda would prepare the side dishes (such as 'vegetable loaf' and 'mushroom turnovers'). There was even one year when I'd made the dessert (a makeshift parfait, consisting of layers of chocolate pudding and graham crackers, topped with whipped cream), which was served along with the obligatory apple and pumpkin pies.
To all "FA" members: As your family (no matter how big or small it is) gathers around the dinner table (either for Easter or Passover), share the love and joy they'd all provided for you over the years. And may you have many a fond memory of the tender moments you have to share with others...
