Inner-Selves, No. 38, Part B
With the petition filed, all there was to do now was wait, Zemy was relieved and his thoughts began to drift to other things, namely the day that he broke up the fight between Jake and Zelia. In retrospect, he felt that he might've been just a tad bit harsh on her, after all, he hadn't gone back to see her since then. The chipmunk rubbed the back of his head and thought about it as he sighed, it brought back happier memories of when he and Zelia played together way back before they came to the academy.
A slightly taller and older looking version of Zemy was drawing something in an art book that he owned. He kept looking at the tall buildings that towered over the wall that led into the playhouse, he was drawing these same buildings as they caught his attention easily, they were so colorful and took on pleasing shapes. He suddenly felt someone grab him by his shoulders, causing him to tense up. "Whatcha doin'?" said the voice of the fur that was behind him. It was a taller and older-looking version of Zelia, she tried her hardest to look over the little chipmunk's shoulders at his drawing, but despite his small size, he knew all too well how to handle such things; he became very good at hiding.
"Zelia, quit it, I don't show my drawings to others, I'm not good enough yet!" Zemy scolded, clutching the art book tightly to his chest. "You're the only one around here who draws, so that makes you the best right? How can you say you're not good enough?" Zelia asked. The chipmunk sighed, "it's complicated, I know it's good but, I can't feel it yet, I don't just wanna draw pictures, I want to feel like I'm breathing life into them" he said as he loosened his grip on the book. "...I don't get it, but I guess if you do then that's all that matters...can I ask what you were drawing?" the wolf girl asked.
The chipmunk looked over at the playhouse again off in the distance. "That place, the place that every spirit fantasizes about, we're forbidden to go inside it but still, there's something about it that makes you just want to keep looking at it and thinking about it" Zemy said. "I know what you mean, but ya'know, there is a way we could go inside it" Zelia replied. "What?! Forget it, why would I wanna go to a baby school just so I could see inside that place?!" Zemy answered. "Oh c'mon Zemy, I think you'd make a cute baby, after all, you always play the baby whenever we play 'House'" the wolf replied. "You make me the baby, I don't wanna be the baby!" Zemy said, getting flustered. "But it's perfect for you, you're so tiny" Zelia said innocently, not wondering why he was getting so worked up about this. Zemy's eyebrow twitched, she'd struck a nerve with him.
"I...am not....that small!"he said through clenched teeth. Zelia started to back away slowly. "Where do you think you're going?" Zemy asked. "Um, I have a little job to do?" Zelia said nervously. "Did you just say 'little'?!" Zemy said angrily. Zelia turned around and ran off, Zemy dropped his art book and ran after her. "Take it back! Take it back right now!" Zemy shouted as he ran after her. "What did I do wrong?!" Zelia shouted back with a worried tone in her voice.
"Zelia was one of my closest friends, I feel kinda bad for not being there for her...I'll stop by and say hello after my work is done" the chipmunk said to himself. Yue the ferret caught up to him and asked if he was feeling ok. "You looked like you were lost in thought for a moment there, is something still bothering you?" Yue asked. "Yeah, just the petition, that's all" Zemy lied. "Well it's out of our hands now, just try to focus on your job now ok?" the ferret advised his young friend. "Sure, thanks, maybe a nap will help me clear my head a little, I haven't gotten much sleep lately" Zemy said. A smell hit both of their noses, causing them to sniff the air, Yue looked down at the chipmunk and noticed a bulge in the back of his onesie. "Hehe, well I think you need a new diaper first" the ferret giggled. Zemy just blushed, then the two of them wandered off to find a changing area.
Fidget lunged forward and began a series of strikes at Hugo, the elephant overseer blocked each one successfully. "You're getting cocky kid, sure you've got a sword, but that doesn't mean you're more equipped to handle a fight than me" Hugo said. After blocking the last slash, Hugo swung his rattle down, Fidget blocked the attack but the ground beneath him gave way as Fidget found himself barely able to withstand the shockwave. "Hmmph, not bad, but if you'd let up even a little bit on your energy, then that attack would've dealt a serious blow" the elephant commented. Fidget panted and staggered back a little, maintaining his fighting stance.
"Did you even think to ask me why I don't have another weapon?" Hugo asked. Fidget was puzzled, but curious nonetheless. "It's to keep my power level in check, I'm strong enough already without a second weapon, my rattle deals more damage than any other youth sprite rattle in the entirety of the 13 units, do you understand the significance of this fact?" Hugo stated. Fidget looked worried as he considered the meaning of his words. "It means that if I did have a second weapon, then my opponents would be so weak, that I would annihilate them almost instantly, and then I wouldn't have enough time to enjoy the fight" Hugo concluded.
The two of them continued their short bouts, Fidget was starting to feel a bit winded as Hugo continued to press on like a steam engine. More of Fidget's attacks began to miss his target entirely, he spent more time dodging Hugo's attacks than blocking them. "C'mon, don't tell me you're wimping out on me!" Hugo griped. Fidget ducked just in time to avoid being struck in the head by Hugo's rattle, a hole was created in the wall next to him from the strike. The bobcat youth sprite messed his diaper from shock, and he resisted the urge to suck his thumb and cower like a scared little baby, even though physically he was one at the moment. "Hehe, is that your fear I'm smelling?" the elephant mocked. Fidget got angry, mostly at himself, there were other furs counting on him to win this, he swung his sword at Hugo out of frustration, but the blade didn't cut him this time; Fidget panicked.
Hugo then swung down his rattle and struck Fidget right in the chest, the bobcat could feel his breastbone and ribs cracking; he coughed up blood and fell to his knees in shock and disbelief. "Didn't I tell you...not to let up on your spirit energy?" Hugo said in a calm demeanor. Fidget gasped and then fell forward, collapsing to the ground in defeat. Leti put her hands at her hips and frowned. "Hmmph, well that didn't last long" she said, sounding disappointed. Hugo checked Fidget's pulse and then turned around and swung his rattle over his shoulder, "tell me about it...that was no fun at all" he said, sounding just as disappointed.
The elephant slowly started to walk away, Fidget could hardly breathe, breathing hurt his chest too much, he began to cry as he gritted his teeth, he couldn't believe it, he'd trained so hard for this whole ordeal. All he could think about was Kat and the rest of his friends, and how Macho also needed his help, but there was absolutely nothing that he could do about it now. As life slowly drained out of him, all the hope and confidence he'd felt when he'd first cut Hugo was replaced by feelings of regret and agony...he'd failed.
