A long time ago I fell in love with the Space wolf chapter of space marines from game workshop’s warhammer 40k miniature game. I was initially attracted to the idea of Vikings with fully automatic weapons in power armor who were worshippers of wolves and elder ways. Making an army of them allowed me a lot of chance to really get into sculpting conversions. This is one of my first real attempts in sculpting for a whole new level of sculpting beyond beards and wolf banners, essentially a debased werewolf space marine called the ‘wulfen’. Although the game stats have fallen by the way side this particular model holds a soft spot in my blackened heart.

Though adeptus astartes does not offer the same range of conversion open to say,.. chaos,.. it does provide alot of oppurtunity for a modeller to explore both aesthetic and tactical considerations with a degree of confidence. There is always some new weapon, unit, or vehicle type to tryout and with the genrally greater unit costs, possible to have a large percentage of your force comprised of conversions with little relative work (at least in comparison to say,.. an ork horde)
I got in with the relase of 'space mnarine' the first incarnation of the 'epic scale' warhammer 40k universe. The rule book had a center page dedicated soley to Russ as a primarch,... I fell in love with them then and there and have never fallen out. The Fimbuljagd is a compilation of my gaming experinces with the space wolves and I have taken a portion of my identity from it.
Definately fan boy I is.

This is a legal model under the current Spacewolf codex. Additionally there is a supplement for whole units of them in the eye of terror codex. The game effect is an expensive upgrade for a wolf guard that grants him additional attacks, always strikes on 3+ (and is always struck on 3+), and is given a penalty of never being allowed to join other units. I do not play with the model on the table top because of it's profile only having 1 wound and otherwise normal spacemarine stats. The hideous cost with it's marginal abilities relegates Freki to clean up or shock value and I find those points better spent on simple grey hunters.
No. I have a wulfen character upgrade for one of my wolf guard. The specific great company I play is is the 'Stormwolf' company which I use no special characters for and rather 'vanilla' Space wolf choices for. Specifically I run a rather mobile armored company,.. lots of Rhinos, Razorbacks, Bikes, and Land speeders. 13th company takes the whole werewolf detail too center stage for my taste. While I do like the idea of a primal half animal thing in powered armour,.. its against the backdrop of a core of more 'traditional' viking's with guns backdrop. That might all change with the new codex,... but that at least is how I have been playing since early 3rd ed.
