I like using Reese in first person, especially this chapter cause he brings up some great point. I just wanted to say this, for whoever’s listening, maybe I can touch one person. It doesn’t matter what other people think you are, or what other people want you to be, it only matters what YOU want for YOUR life. If people aren’t alright with you being gay or bi or lesbian or whatever, it doesn’t matter. You will always meet opposition, no matter who you are or who you love. Hell, it could be over what you ate for dinner last night, something so insignificant. But if you let it get to you, you make it significant.
When people tell you that being different if a good thing, they aren’t just wasting breath. They know that once you’re out in the real world, the only thing you want to be is different. Being different is so much more fun than being normal. And you will have to use that difference to land a job, or go to college, and of course, to be happy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you (whoever you are) to come out, I’m just simply saying that you don’t have to be scared, if that’s what you are. If you have friends who’ll be there for you, that’s all you need. And if they aren’t there for you, and throw you out like you were some piece of trash not even worth the time, then they were never you friend (this x1000).
I remember before I came out that I was scared shitless, but one person, who was homophobic from what I could tell, changed my whole perspective. We were sitting down watching TV and eating, I blurted out that I was gay. He laughed, but stopped when I didn’t say anything. And after we talked for a while, and he was sure, I will never forget this, he said that if anyone hurt me or tried to hurt me, that he would kick their ass.
Rhetorical question time: Do you know why he said that? Because he was my friend. I knew going into it that he would probably want to leave, but he stayed and we actually had a really adult conversation about it. I know he still has problems with it, and it doesn’t help that I prod him with “that gay sex was sooooooo good last night” ( =P). But even other homophobes have told me that they respect me for doing what I did ad that it took balls. Sure it’s not all running in meadows and picking flowers. There are always people who look down at me like I stepped in shit, but those guys are characters. Most, and this is true so you can quote me, is that most homophobes are so scared about themselves being gay, they “have” to put down gays to show that they aren’t with us. And I love the line Elliot Stabler says in ‘Law and Order: SVU, which is “Homophobes make the best gays.”
I’ll leave off on, be true to yourself and don’t care who talks about who. Do what YOU want to do, not what others want you to do. My business teacher, never forget him, wonderful guy, would always teach with the concept WIFM, which means: What’s In It For Me. Every class he would challenge us to apply every concept he would teach us to our own lives, and not the person next to us. And this applies to everyone, so when you are thinking about something (and hopefully it’s legal!) don’t think “What will Johnny think?”, opt that for “What do I think?”
Thanks for reading my outburst of stuff, and if this doesn’t apply to you, hopefully you will find someone struggling. (Probably didn’t think you were going to get this today) Whelp, love you all and have a great day and a Happy Easter! =)
