Gustheart was given the title Dragon Eyes for a reason. He was one of the only ones with the ability to yield the magic to its fullest potential. The magic that was familiar to the line of Collectors wasn't as ancient as lore would have you believe. It had been only recently that the Collectors had been established. Their sole purpose was to extract those individuals who possessed the gift of foresight, and that was exactly how Gustheart had been chosen.
When the crest of the Guild, the shadow hunters, had first been introduced to the country of the sheltered Animus, a spiritual, thriving utopia dominated by the anthropomorphic woodland, grace in the knowledge of mind and body between animal and nature were an idealistic art and fantasy. However, when the tide of their spiritual shores were interrupted by the arrival of a new race from a far and distant land, what the Druids label as Obscurus, their fantasies soon changed from knowledge to one of practice. The race of mankind had brought the Animus a means by which their pool of magic could become manifest, and that was brought with the revelation of the collective unconscious inner being, a shadow psyche inherit in the majority of all living creatures.
But it was the Animus who were able to withhold the splendor of the ideal archetype in its primal glory, for they were biologically better attuned to the nature and instinct of the supernatural world. It was man who formed the Collectors, and it was they who imparted the mechanics necessary to discover the various latent archetypes.
However, the psyche that was soon determined to be the most useful was what the Collectors soon termed the Dragon Eyes, for it was this psyche, the spirit of a dragon, that was the wisest and sagacious of the pair of inner anima. With the Dragon Eyes, the abilities of magic could be tuned in such a manner that their latent psyche could take possession of the designated Animus, and they would have the heart, mind, and soul of the most interesting and magical creatures in all of existence, for no one was believed to have ever seen a dragon, and knew little of its magical power.
Gustheart was chosen as one such Animus. A feline in body, he had snowy fur with gray leopard flecks, as well as long golden hair. His eyes were a striking blue on their own. It was a summer day, and he was just refining his knowledge of the mystical folk under his tutor Ethedius when he was told to drop his lesson for the day and seek the Arch Bishop in the Druid's quarters. When he had reached the Bishop's chambers, however, he was surprised to see a Man. He had rust colored eyes and dark, oily hair. Gustheart had never seen one before, only illustrations in the textbooks, but he was immediately struck with a feeling of awe. The quick scrutinizing eyes of the man made him uneasy, and he was quick to hasten to the words of the Bishop, a hare, at his side.
"Gustheart, this is Hector. Hector Ashwell. The Collectors have been studying you for some time and they believe you have the potential for a special archetype. Based off of your interests and demeanor, they have determined that you have the latency of a very powerful inner animus. They believe you may be possessed by a dragon."
Gustheart knew dragons from the texts he had read on them. In the scripts, they were the only mystical creatures said to be contained in the Archethurial Manuscript. In the scripts, they were said to have the power of foresight, and through their inner animus, were able to recite the Archethurial Scripts themselves.
This came as a shock to Gustheart at first, he looked from Arch Bishop Galathor and then to the scrutinizing eyes of the man called Ashwell. The foreign man's piercing gaze took his thoughts away from him, and the poor young leopard had a hard time collecting his faculties. In a dizzying lurch, he near fainted, if not for the rush of the man to his side. The man laid his hands on Gustheart and steadied him on his feet. Until Gustheart got his bearings, was he able to look up into the man's face again. This time the man's face was softened with a warm smile, and he felt himself relax.
Gustheart left the apprenticeship of his teacher Ethedius and the comforts of his woodland home to travel to the overlooking cliffs south of the forest, where, just further south, were the distant lands of Obscurus. This was discovered to be the Collector's chief encampment, and it was here that Gustheart was trained to awaken his dragon form and where he was taught the customs of the Soothsayers.
