It was to help character development and to show what happens in the swamp of sadness when you let sadness control you. When Artax drowned in his sorrows Atreyu almost did as well but was saved by the luck dragon Falkor. :3 The entire movie/book was basically how to deal with problems life gives you and as a child you try and figure things out and with a little bit of luck and encouragement you can overcome the bad times. It also held the theme that even though you grow up you don't have to stop your imagination.
