Actually not, Scythes were only ever designed to be harvesting tools, it's why the blade is facing the using. Effectively the only real way to use this weapon in a fight would be if the opponent was already close enough to stab you, and even then the only usable fighting style would have to be a halberd fighting technique, and that wouldn't even be effective given the curve of the blade. This is why when they altered scythes for combat they actually turned the blade so that it was straight out from the shathe (and no, that's not a mis-spelling. The shaft of a scythe is known as the shathe). The Scythe was later replaced entirely by spears (a far older style of weapon) that's how ineffective they were on the battlefield.
Now other scythe like weapons that were better used in combat would be a weapon like the Kama, who's technique involves butt strikes far more than it does blade strikes as well as mostly just being a tool to cut wheat and climb trees.
Fighting technique alone does not make up for the fact that a tool is a tool. Don't get me wrong though, it's still extremely cool.

Bladed weapons are a passion of mine and I do a lot of research. Don't get me wrong though. A menacing appearance is sometimes all you need. One of the reasons that swordsmen worked so hard to build a reputation was to drive away other swordsman from taking them on. "The best sword fight is the one you can win without ever having to draw your blade."
