Twenty-five years ago, he was just a sixteen-year-old boy in high school, playing on the basketball team, studying hard, and spending all the time he could with a lovely young okapi. It was harder then, while the prejudices still ran high against homosexuals, the marriages weren't legal, and people were still afraid of things that were different. Even Wilmer had been afraid. Afraid to love somebody that every fibre of his being said was wrong to love. But by embracing his fears, he discovered his greatest love.
Twenty years ago, an accident ended Wilmer's dreams before they ever began, but he had Ariel there to catch him when he fell. To pick him back up and encourage him to move onward and upward. That reminded him that there was more to life than just basketball. The red deer could never have done it without his beloved okapi.
Eighteen years ago, they decided to start a family of their own. Wilmer chuckled a little as he remembered how Ariel had started dropping hints before practically begging for Wilmer to figure out how they could do it. It was difficult to work out, but they wanted it more than anything else in the world at the time. They were so happy and so in love, it only seemed right to want to include a child in their love.
Seventeen years ago, they were gifted with a beautiful set of twins. A sweet little boy and a beautiful little girl. Blythe and Darby. They were, at long last, a complete family. They had somebody else to share their love with. Things were finally starting to feel complete.
Nine years ago, their relationship went from a simple “common law” arrangement, to a proper married life. As soon as the news reached them that gay marriages had been legalized in Canada, they hadn't hesitated to rush off for a holiday, and a wedding. It had been hard to have the ceremony without their families, but they had agreed that having each other was all that seriously mattered. They returned to England with matching rings on their fingers and bigger smiles than ever on their faces. They were Wilmer and Ariel Grehr, now and forever.
Seven years ago, when Wilmer received a job offer at an American university managing their basketball team, the small family knew it was an offer he couldn't refuse. The hop across the pond was hard as they left family and friends behind. Wilmer could still remember the tears in his husband's eyes as they took off from London International, but he'd reached over and put his arm around the okapi. He could immediately see relief in Ariel's expression. No matter where they went, they always had each other. The tears disappeared.
Four years ago, they'd ended up leaping from Portland to San Francisco when Wilmer got another offer, a better offer. Wilmer remembered wanting to turn it down, feeling terrible to uproot his family once more after they'd settled into their new home. But Ariel had embraced him, kissed him, and reminded him, yet again, that they'd still have each other, that they could build a new home in a new city. Even Blythe and Darby had hugged their father and told him it was alright. How could he say no?
A year ago, they moved to Galveston for the biggest job of Wilmer's career as he finally got the honour of being offered the job of an FBA General Manager. It was huge, and they'd all been terribly excited to see him finally make it big, as he'd always dreamed. He'd lost his basketball career before it could ever begin, but now, he made it bigger than he'd ever imagined. Texas was a scary place for them though; it felt like being back home amongst the fear and the prejudice, but together they'd persevere.
And now, here they were in Hawaii.
Their life in America thus far had been a busy one, but no matter the outcome with the Kahunas, Wilmer knew he never wanted to leave Honolulu, he never wanted to uproot his family again, not from this beautiful state. They weren't far off from being empty-nesters anyway, so why not stay somewhere where they could truly enjoy it when it comes?
Returning home that evening, Wilmer smiled fondly at the sight of his husband in the kitchen making dinner, sighing happily as he moved to embrace the beautiful okapi from behind. It felt as though the man had just gotten lovelier and lovelier with age.
“You seem terribly happy tonight, Wil...” Ariel said with a smile, grasping his husband's hand as he tilted his head to look up into familiar chestnut eyes. Wilmer merely nuzzled up to him happily, eyes closed.
“Just been thinking of the last twenty-five years of our lives...”
Ariel smiled.
“Twenty-five years of life, love, and laughter, darling.”
This was a picture I had commissioned featuring my character, Wilmer Grehr (Red Deer), GM of the Hawaii Kahunas, and his beloved husband, Ariel (okapi). I felt it was about time I started fleshing Wilmer out more and decided that this past Sunday (the 20th of April) was their 25th anniversary. There will be more stories to come to further detail their past together.
